The First Ottoman Caliph Was Not Osman!

Sultan Selim I is considered to be the 1st ottoman Caliph after forcing the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mutawakkil III to abdicate the title after the ottoman conquest of Egypt . The Abbasids, after the sacking of Baghdad became cermonial figureheads of the muslim world, Caliph by title, whilst the real authority lay with the Mamluks. Selim 1 dealt with the Safavids to the east and consolidated the Mamluk territories into the Ottoman Empire, including both Makkah and Medina. He essentially unified the Muslims under one authority in just 8 years, allowing his son the famous Suleiman al Qanuni to challenge the eastern european armies without distraction.#shortsclip
