Irish Terrier

The Irish Terrier. Quite the little hot-head! He’s in-yer-face, confident and brave with a strong assertive streak. A very playful dog, he likes to explore and is very interested by the everyday objects he comes across. His overwhelming trait is his independence, which is complemented by an incredibly strong will.

Brash, bold daredevil / Playful and inquisitive / Independent with a strong will

Ready for action most of the time, he’s always up for an adventure, so let’s hope you are too! He’s not the most friendly chap ever, but his aggression is usually reserved for dogs or pets he doesn’t know. He’s quite aloof with strangers but will prove to be a loyal and entertaining companion to his owner, you!

Loves action and adventure / Bit grumpy… and snappy / Loves you… others not so much

He loves to chase, to run and to explore; he’s also a hunter and will do so whenever he gets the chance. His mind and body are very active and he’ll need a good amount of daily mental and physical exercise, this ensures he’s well mannered around the house. He makes a great hiking or hunting partner.

Adores running / Craves to hunt and explore / Needs physical and mental stimulation daily

Grooming needs are fairly demanding. Ideally you’ll comb his wiry coat two or three times a week, but some owners prefer to do it less frequently, it depends on your lifestyle really. He should have scissor shaping or clipping at least three times a year for optimal condition. You may want to train his ears too, to get that distinct adult shape.

Coat care takes time / Needs regular combing and clipping / Work those ears, baby!

Interesting facts: Once one of the most popular breeds in Britain! Many owners around that time used to clip their ears, though this was banned by The Irish Terrier Club of England. A debate then followed which resulted in the banning of ear clipping across all breeds in the UK. What a little activist! During WW1 these dogs served as military messengers because of their fearless nature. The Irish has longer legs than other terriers, making him the best runner of the terrier group.

Was a popular choice once / Owners clipped ears… which led to debate… which led to a blanket ban. Result! / WW1 messenger dogs / Great runners

The Irish Terrier. A headstrong daredevil with a entertaining disposition.

An entertaining madcap.
