What Do Pilots ACTUALLY Do on Long Flights?

Autopilot is doing more and more of the actual flying nowadays. When pilots are on ultra long-haul flights, this means they spend just a tiny fraction of their time actually flying the plane. So, what exactly do they do most of the time? And how do they avoid getting bored? Let me explain...

Ex C-5 flight Engineer here before everything was computerized we actually had things to keep us busy. I spent most of my time at the Engineer panel monitoring systems, pressurization, and fuel flow. I also spent allot of time in the performance charts looking up optimal altitudes, and monitoring fuel burn calculations manually. Usually there would be just one pilot at the controls on a long flight, and the other pilot would be resting. The pilot at the controls kept alert monitoring the flight and listening for ATC. We would however listen to the BBC on the HF radio sometimes.

Airplane movies that people often miss ... Zero Hour! (1957) is the movie Airplane! satirizes and Fate is the Hunter (1964) investigates an airplane crash. Both good.

You have to see aviation movies: Flight, Sully, Aviator, Top Gun, The Final Countdown, Behind Enemy Lines, The Bridges at To Ko Ri, Strategic Air Command, and also The Right Stuff and First Man.

The oldest and most classic film is "Runway 08". It's also where the idea of the pilot and co-pilot eating different meals originally came from. No joke. A fictional story created a standard airline policy. The other classic film is "Airport." The original, not the cheesy sequels. These two are good old classic films.
And although you didn't ask, I'll recommend a fantastic book. "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K. Gann (it's about his own flying experiences). The greatest book about flying ever written--the writing is outstanding and beautiful, the stories are amazing and the history is fascinating (it's about the early days of commercial aviation). I've read it so many times I've lost count.
