Honest question: what's wrong with asking someone where they're from?

Wow I’m African American and I was called an Oreo all my life. Black on the outside while somehow acting “white”. To hear the Asian young men speak on the “banana” and “coconut” terms is crazy... ignorance really is universal

Please retitle the video to 'pathetic crap that offends people with the worlds thinnest skin'
It would be much more adequate.

E.G 1:43 Never knew moving a bag was racist. Oh right it isn't. It's called being polite and moving your stuff out of the way.

As what TedEdtalks says, Skin Color is our ancestor's adaptation to deadly sun rays called ultra violet rays, the further we are at the equator, the less sun rays we get, so the less melanin we need, the lighter the skin. The skin is not something should be disgusted for. Skin color is not the base of our personality and beauty, it is rather a fascinating adaptation that helps the human species survive in warmer climates. This is not something to be prejudiced for, but something to be thankful for. Without the melanin in our skin, humans living on warmer places will die of skin cancer. Please remember that skin is not identity but rather adaptability.

Welcome to 2015, a time when curiosity about somebody's ethnicity is considered racism.

This video makes a strong case that micro aggressions don't actually exist. I got asked "where're you from?" by a coworker this week. I'm blond with blue eyes. They were just making polite conversation. They wanted to know what part of the the country I was born in and the orgin of my last name since it's a bit ethnic sounding. It's a perfectly normal thing to ask someone. It's a way to get to know someone by asking them to talk about themselves. If a white person asks you that question, they are talking to you in exactly the same manner they would anyone else, irrespective of your skin color. Most people ask what's your name, where are you from, as a matter of course in polite conversation. They genuinely want to know your story. This isn't news to anyone, especially people who are concerned with micro aggressions. Most of the rest don't even fall into the category of micro aggressions. Small penis? How does someone work that into conversation in a polite, unintentionally inoffensive way, lol? Except as an attempt at humor that wasn't appropriate. The same for nearly everything else in this video. You're an angry black women? That's a micro aggression? Calling someone a terrorist? Lmao? Those are stereotypes, not micro aggressions. Moving a bag out of the way to make room for you on the tube? That's an insult? They ran out of actual examples quite quickly since there's almost no real-life examples to highlight and quickly turned to in-group insults. If micro aggressions are an uncharitable, race-based knee-jerk reactions that cause offense. Then micro aggressions as a category are themselves micro aggressions.

Black people are called black, whites are called whites, and indians are called indians, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Enough of this dancing on egg shells because of people’s ultra sensitivity.
We are all diverse in skin colour and culture and there is nothing wrong with pointing it out, with the right heart motive.

Being accused of having a crush on someone when I am not even attracted to them at all while I am only being interested in what they have to say or being called sexy by someone who shouldn't is something I really hate. Bragging about how their legs are not turned the right way to get a scholarship too is another thing I hate. At least people never assume that I get free gasoline.

I've spent a lot of time overseas (mostly Asia), people ask ignorant questions about white people there too.}
It's all relative.

we should be opening the conversation up not shutting it down, the problem with video is may make people paranoid they're gonna be racist and therefore they won't ask anything, won't learn anything and there will end up being ignorant and uninformed - the woman saying 'oh some people are naïve and ask me where I'm from or about my culture' the fact she is offended by that may discourage people from taking an interest in her in general and her culture, fair enough if she finds it offensive. The heart is in the right place with this project I just feel like there's a lot of matter of fact e.g just stating accounts of racism as in the video rather than promoting tolerance and diversity or ways to address racism.

i am biracial and if I wear a like patterned boho scarves I get shady looks and if I'm dressed a certain way I may get asked how to make Asian food but even when I'm around other black people I'm called an oreo... the struggle is real

I think Somali people should have been included in the video. We face prejudice from every race daily

Why so many downvotes? Anyone who doesn't think any of these words are microaggressions obviously lives in a bubble. Being stereotyped is a way to be labeled into a group (mostly an outgroup) and to project one's insecurities on another. I mean how is it not spreading hate when you call someone a terrorist, prostitute, thief, criminal, thug, etc. If you think its nothing, you could ask yourself how would you feel if someone said those words to your mother, child, sister, brother, etc. in a way that belittled them or meant to try to to make them feel inferior.

So again if you haven't experienced microaggressions Im happy you havent had to experience hate, but do understand that many people do. That we all share this one world. Would you rather it be a pleasant experience, or one where we all are armed with our words of hate ready to be slung at each other (isnt that how wars are started). Hate begets hate, choose positivity and love its the better way.

The amount of dislike to likes ratio and all of these comments that have completely missed the mark tells you a lot about - what I’m assuming to be - British society in particular. If you are curious there are certain ways to word things as some questions do come across with passive aggressive undertones where micro aggressive or racist things are implied.

One English shouted at me at the station: go back to China.
When I said I'm not Chinese, she got disconcerted.
If I said I as of Japanese descent, but Brazilian nationality, her brain would collapse and I didn't have time to educate her about the world, history, immigration in the American continent, etc etc
