The art of Greek Coffee | Η τέχνη του Ελληνικού καφέ
If you ever visit Greece, you must try at least once a cup of strong traditional Greek coffee or you can make it at home like I do every single day!
Greek coffee is very popular in Greece, not only because of its strong flavor and aroma, but also because of the historical background of it.
Greek coffee is attached to Greek culture. Greeks drink coffee to socialize and relax, to discuss their everyday lives and hang out with their friends after work or on weekends. Greeks are hanging out in cafes that are called "Kafenio" in Greek and enjoying their friend company and sipping coffee for hours! Aw! yes!
But now lets see what you need to make a Greek coffee at home :
1. Briki
To prepare Greek coffee you should have a briki, a long-handled Greek coffee maker (and not only, I personally also use it to boil eggs too). The process requires medium heat and stirring, until foam starts shaping and rising (we don't boil the coffee). That foam is called "kaimaki" and it's the most important part of the Greek coffee, so try to make it right!
2. Sugar or not
I personally like my coffee black (sketo in Greek). Some people like to have it sweet or medium sweet (gliko or metrio in Greek). For a size cup like the video one - two tea spoons of Greek coffee for black (sketo - σκέτο) and no sugar. For medium sweet (metrio - μέτριο) - add one teaspoon of sugar and two tea spoons of Greek coffee and for sweet (gliko - γλυκό) add two teaspoons of Greek coffee two of sugar.
3. Greek coffee
Don't use any type of finely ground coffee, only Greek coffee that you can find on Greek or Metiteranian stores. Store the coffee in an air sealed jar to maintain its aroma and freshness for longer.
You can serve your coffee with some cookies or a dessert and a glass of cold water.
