In most movies children are coddled and protected, so adults are usually sacrificed to protect them so they survive to the end. This scene made the movie real. You foul up, you die. Three innocent mistakes were made by three different people, and it cost the entire family dearly. It told us that no one's effing around.

Leaves toy and batteries laying in front of kids face and walks away. Hikes home thru monster infested area and leaves child to bring up the rear 50 yards behind the rest of the family. Seems like exactly what you’d do if you wanted to get rid of a kid.

Why didn’t the Dad keep the batteries? Could’ve found a compatible flashlight along the route and kept the toy from turning on.

I think this scene established the tone of this world really well. Most of it is silent and when there is something about to make noise it is made to feel threatening. And then when there is the loud noise of the toy, we feel a sense of panic. I think it also stresses the “survival of the fittest” aspect of the movie. Kids are dumb and he knew better but he was a kid and that unfortunately meant that he didn’t have much of a chance surviving for that long. It also kind of introduces the characters and their personalities just by the way they react to this tragedy. This movie is crazy good dude

Ngl, him dying here was a massive relief for the rest of the family. If he wasn’t so far away they would all be dead, and if this situation didn’t happen he would get them killed anyways.
