Snapped a chain just the other day. It really did some damage. Twisted the chain, broke a tooth on the cassette, bent the derailleur cage, bent the hanger and dinged up a couple spokes. Expensive lesson learned to better time my shifting.

There's a meme about homer simpson in a hospital bed pushing the bed control "bed goes up, bed goes down" that a I feel captures the complexity here.

Biking is like so many sports ..there is a lot to learn and think about. You need anticipate and adjust for your situation in advance to improve the experience.

I always tell people if you need your mech to move better up the gears(shifting left from behind the bike) turn the barrel adjuster to the left, if you need to help the mech move to the right then turn the barrel adjuster to the right.

having an oval chain ring seems to help shifting under load timing is key

The best advice I have for beginners is to try single speed. You will learn incredible technique, and actually have a lot more fun with the simplicity of single speed MTB.... counter-intuitively - you will also be faster.

I actually miss having a set of rings up front.

Squillienth: a measurement so small you barely notice. Example- “The US debt was reduced by a squillienth this quarter, say financial experts.”

I've used my bike for about 5 or 6 years and have never snapped a chain

No wonder people are wanting automatic transmission huh? Even 1x is way too complex for them lol

I'm sure this video is somewhat informative and helpful for beginners. Sadly it's the last video I'll watch from GMBN though since the channel has become so extremely basic and aimed for ABSOLUTE beginners over the last months that I simply can't find anything of interest for me amymore. Thanks for the journey though, take care.
