On Lesvos, located 38 km north of Mytilene, is Mantamados, known throughout the country for the Monastery of the Archangel, its important tradition in the art of pottery and its dairy products. During the Middle Ages because of repeated raids by pirates, many coastal settlements in the area moved around the sacred shrine of the Archangel and thus created Mantamados.
