The massive temple structure has nine gateways and four of these are adorned by "gopurams" or towers that are decorated with highly exquisite and intricate carvings. There are five elaborate halls in the temple of which the Raja Sabha or the 1000-pillared hall is one of the most splendid features of the temple. In Tamil, there's a popular saying, "gopuram darisanam kodi punyam", which translates to "sight of a temple tower is worth 10 million pious activities."

The temple has five prakaras resembling the sheaths.
Natarajar gives dharshan from the sanctum called chit sabha with a golden roof.
The roof has 22600 tiles, denoting the number of times a person can breathe in a day.
These tiles are fixed to the wooden roof with the help of 72000 nails depicting the number of nadis.
On the top of the roof we can find 9 kalasas depicting the 9 gateways in the human body.
The chit sabha roof is supported by 4 pillars symbolising the 4 vedas.
As the heart is to the left of the body, the sanctum is slightly alligned to the left side.
The roof has 64 cross wooden reapers denoting the 64 kinds of art.
The artha mandapa has 6 pillars denoting the six shastras.
The mandapa next to the artha mandapa has 18 pillars symbolising the 18 puranas.
