First I wanted to say I clicked on this as someone who had already fallen deep in love with the books back when they came out and just wanted to hear someone else geek out about them, however, at 4:20 there is an important thing to note. Leigh Bardugo, the author, has a degenerative condition that causes pain and difficulties when walking. She's spoken about how Kaz was a very personal character for her. Kaz's injury bothers him occasionally, but it's not meant to be a major obstacle. It can be disrespectful to expect a character with a disability to be completely halted by it with some degree of frequency. The writing shows that Kaz largely carries himself with dignity and strength because of the position that he has within the Barrel, but it can be physically tiring. Ultimately, Kaz is supposed to be a character with a disability, but that is a feature of his character, not a defining characteristic. Leigh Bardugo's condition clearly helped to inform how Kaz was written. Also worth mentioning is that the sequel, Crooked Kingdom (which came out after this video was made, to be completely fair) has a really thoughtful conversation about disabilities.

This was so interesting because I'm german and I got some of the references but not all of them. e.g. Specht, Tante and Geld are exactly the same in german and it was really cool to see which refernces I still missed :)

So I don’t speak Dutch but when I started the book and saw some familiar looking Dutch looking words I got so excited! The language nerd in me got so excited about a fictional language

For anyone wondering, Leigh Bardugo clarified that she based the duology on the 1860s time period.

This was a great video! I've been hearing that six of crows was Dutch inspired after I finished it. I was kind of ashamed cuz I just assumed it was Russian inspired like the grisha trilogy, I couldn't even tell. So thanks for the info.

I had some moments where I read some sentences in which word souned dutch and I caught me thinking over it because I didn't know, if they were normal english or dutch words "smuggeled" in XD (especially in Crooked Kingdom)

I picked up that Ketterdam was more inspired by Dutch as well because my mum is Dutch so I'd see a word like Wijnstraat and be like...dutch...hehe. I thought it was so cool! Are you fully Dutch (as in both Dutch parents) because your english is so good! Do you live in the Netherlands? Oh and great video btw you're so energetic!
