So you've curious about doing a modeling focused math internal assessment. Cool. I've got you covered. Most of us have not had experience writing an essay in math class, so we're learning a new skill.

First, let's figure out what you should and should not include in your modeling based internal assessment. That's what this video will cover for you. If you're not familiar with all the ideas in this video, check out my various playlists on the different math topics to help you:

These ideas should be applicable for either SL AA or SL AI and even has a lot of potential to help my Higher Level IB Math friends out there.

It's not an easy process to write a good IA. There is a lot to consider to make it complete, clear and concise. But if this was helpful, let me know in the comments below.

I am doing a modelling IA, (relationship between the speed of a bike and the pedalling rate, i.e. pedal revolutions per second) and have gathered data by changing the gear for each trial etc. My data is a degree 6 polynomial with a few maxima. My teacher says that analysing the function with calculus (stationary points with derivative, inflexion points and concavities with double derivative, etc + explaining their significance) and using lots of mathematical terminology while doing so is enough for analysis. However I am a maths AA HL student and am worried about the level of the maths involved, which is SL level (this could affect the 'use of maths' criteria)? Perhaps there is a way to incorporate related rates (HL topic)? - after all I'm dealing with dx/dt and dRevolutions/dt...

Hey thank you so much I found this video really useful! I am currently doing "modelling my basketball shot" but I am a bit stuck since I do not know where to go with this, since there is no research question that it answers. I was wondering if you have any tips or suggestions for me, Thanks!

I am doing modeling IA (relationships between the height at which I dribble affecting the speed of the basketball). How do I find out my formula from my graph? I have yet to make a graph, but if I were to how would I find it out? and would I be making an equation for all different heights and comparing the speeds of those?

hey whats your opinion on a modeling plus statistics IA? Like I got a bit nervous if my HL math will be strong but I trying to analyze two models I found in a topic where I collected personal data...that included a bit of functions like linear and non-linear regression where logarithmic graph was suitable for one of them. Now Im thinking to use RMSE validity test to analyze them and coefficient of determination.

Do you think it is scoring enough?

i am writing my maths internal assessment to see if GDP per capita affects the number of men per 100k with liver cancer in developed and developing countries. so far I have done the standard deviation and mean and I've seen the difference/correlation is not very strong. i am really not sure what to do in terms of modelling and what calculus has to do with it could you please help me clarify that
