Pioneered during production on the Mandalorian, Virtual Production screens, known as 'volumes' are a revolutionary filmmaking tool when combined with 3D gaming engines like Unreal, that can produce incredible results. Originally screened for the the 2022 FMX Convention in Stuttgart, Tommy and JP spent 3 days experimenting with miniature photography on a VP volume, in an effort to take this new technology to new and exciting places.

I love that virtual production is bringing back the nice CG/practical blend we had in the late 90s, before everyone went CG crazy. I think mixing both works wonders.

Really exciting to see this tech finally in the hands of indy filmmakers. When I first saw this used in the Mandolorian I knew it was the future. For Indy productions it's a game-changer.

The monitors in the miniature was a superb test. Love seeing VP used in new ways like that. Definitely has our minds racing.

I say this every video but this is the coolest one yet. I am not a film maker. I'm just a fan of movies and learning how they're made. But you were tickling _my_ brain with ideas. I've seen the BTS of The Mandalorian and I just assumed volume tech is something only a big studio could ever do.

But then you mentioned projectors. What a great idea. I am quite the computer geek so I've tinkered with Unreal. So by the end of the video, I had this home brew volume in my head using a projector, 3D printed models, and a home made motion control rig made of an Arduino and some small motors with my cell phone mounted on it to shoot the video. I have no idea if that's possible but I really want to try it.

Great video, as always.

immediately thinking about the mini 1080p screens they make for raspberry pies with HDMI inputs, perfect for custom installation in miniature windows, cockpits etc

Fantastic to see technology evolving and just putting more power and creativity into the hands of filmmakers. It allows so much to be accomplished with so much less.

I love the idea of VP being used to actually bring back miniatures and make them a more relevant part of film production again. There is just so much room for versatility and innovation.

I love the idea of it being used as a tool to potentially make films much more cost-effective without losing a sense of scope or scale.

Awesome stuff! VP is something I’m getting real interested in for sure. The natural lighting effect is so worth it.

Quick thing on language. I know film makers are talking about volumes, but these sort of spaces have existed in VR for decades just not using the LED panels from outdoor advertising.
In VR they are known as Caves!
A classic example was the connection between Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre & EuroParc in Cambridge UK where two semi-circles were connected to make a virtual connection space. The sort of thing we do everyday with a Zoom /Skype call
As opposed to Head Mounted Displays AKA VR Goggles that were first publiced by VPL's eyePhone (when Apple brought out the iPhone as opposed to the iCell I was very confused)

its so convincing that even though you show how its done, my brain just doesnt notice it as effects and just accepts it as real.
