Fieldsports Britain – sabs on a pheasant shoot

Two sabs armed with whips and chemical sprays stopped a shoot where we were filming. They had been looking for a hunt to disrupt, but they heard shooting so followed the sound. It only takes two to stop the 20-50 people out shooting from having their day. So what do you do about it if it happens to you? Step forward former Metropolitan police detective Ian Jensen and BASC’s Gareth Dockerty, who explain your rights, and how you can get the police to help.

That’s not all. Geoff Garrod is having a soggy day on the squirrels, Deborah Hadfield goes in search of game meat and finds it is a restaurant delicacy, and James Head gives his view on the age-old airgunning question, .22 or .177?

We are giving away a peg on a 200-bird day on 3 November 2023 priced at £1,100, thanks to Gwysaney Sporting, David is on the news stump, and James Marchington has the best hunting videos on YouTube in Hunting YouTube. It’s all in this week’s #FieldsportsBritain

I used to carry a bar of soap when I was involved in shoots. It was like garlic to a vampire

If sabs invade a shoot, first elect a spokesperson to make the first engagement, ask the sabs who they are and what they are doing on the land. Elect another shoot member to film the proceedings, do not engage with the sabs but film their faces and without being deemed as aggressive as close as is necessary to keep the camera in focus. That and very little else. Walk away and call the police and inform the police as per the video. In the meantime, every member of the shoot party departs from the scene and if possible, eat sandwiches, drink coffee but do not drink alcohol, chat away to each other but totally ignore the sabs. It goes without saying, put the dogs away or take them to a safe place as well as any weapons. If anyone is carrying a knife, put it in a vehicle and lock it.
Repeat….do not engage with the sabs …. Ignore them….they do not like it….they are attention seekers, being ignored will irritate them.
Enjoy your sandwiches and chat for as long as you like. If they trespass into your space, ignore them, turn your back on them. Do not under any circumstances give them the pleasure of seeing you are displeased by their presence. Any of the shooting party begins to get frustrated, take him/her to a vehicle and drive him/her away but do tell the shoot captain you are leaving but DO NOT SAY WHY. The sabs will not know what is happening and will be confused.
Repeat….do not engage but simply blank them out.
If they attempt to make conversation, blank them, walk away….calmly.
Inform the beaters and pickers up by radio to STOP, collect into a group and await further instructions.
If it is midway through a shoot and time for lunch, tell everyone and carry on about your business as normal but above all else continue to ignore the sabs…..blank them out constantly.
If the police arrive, let them do the talking, tell them the sabs are trespassing and their actions are likely to cause a breach of the police and if there are children present advise the police officers the children were distressed by the situation created by the presence of the sabs, especially if they are wearing those silly masks or have their face covered.
Ask the police to talk to the elected shoot person in private out of earshot of the sabs and if they insist on talking to the group, insist the discussion be out of earshot from the sabs……..again, this total exclusion irritates the hell out of sabs.
Far better the sabs make the first aggressive move on film without any prompting. Remember your right to a shotgun is at risk, stay calm and remain the status of being a fit person to hold a certificate.

It`s a strange world we live in if the best advice we can come up with, is to just ignore these two clowns, stop shooting, pack up your guns, and go home. It will be the easiest win they`ve ever had.

I`m curious to know if this same advice would be given in other scenarios ??
If these same guys decided they don`t like football, and stand on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. Would the 40, 000 paying spectators be told to ignore them, quietly leave the stadium, and go home?

Or they stand on a runway because they don`t like people flying. Would everyone be told " sorry, but these two clowns don`t want you to go on holiday, so could you all just leave the airport, and go home please"

Hey, maybe they could stand on the Chief Constable`s driveway and stop him leaving home. I`m sure the Chief Constable would be fine with that, and just ignore them.

It`s just a guess, but I have a feeling they would be cuffed, dragged off, and charged within minutes. Maybe i`m wrong.

It is a sad world we live in where when you or your legal activity is attacked you cannot defend those rights...

Please let the sabs know they are committing aggravated trespass. Don't leave the shoot or they will see it as a win.

Stopping shoot days is different from fox hunts as there is a financial loss element.
They can be taken to court for the financial loss individually or as an organisation.
Luckily here in Scotland it's actually illegal for them to interfere with a shoot under land access law so not just a civil offence.

The guy with the spray bottle on his belt was guilty of having an offensive weapon if it is anything other than water.

When you have paid a lot of money for a day’s shooting I’m not sure I would want to pack up and go home because a few sabs turn up.

Someone on my property with a mask on and being threatening or refusing to leave would be likely to meet very small objects going very fast in their direction.... but then I don't live in the the police are, largely, not on the side of the thugs.
There is NO way these creeps should be allowed to disrupt lawful activity. It would serve the ratbags right if some of them got injured.
It seems in the UK you have to allow them to succeed. That is WRONG.

The truthfulness of this situation is

The whole off the field sports community let the lurcher and terrier and houndmen down and all laughed when we said there gonna be after you lot next !!!!

Well look what’s happening

Time for peace is over really cause your gonna loose everything you hold dear to your hearts

Main, main thing is everyone must use cameras, phones and all sorts of other photographic/filming methods to record them from all angles at all times. Never lose your cool. They are the ones there because they're fizzing over, they'll do that (as we all know!) but that will be ignored if our lot wave their arms and shout. Let them do that.

Well done done Charlie and Co for a great show with a good and varied content. The story on what to do about sabs is timely for down here when our duck season starts next month. At least ours don't carry whips or socks filled with rocks etc.Keep up the great work from Australia.
