Blended Wing Body with a Two Stage To Orbit Mission Profile

A conceptual study of a blended wing body (Blue Dart One - BDO) running on liquid hydrogen (LH2) was conducted. The plane is designed for a two stage to orbit (Two Stage To Orbit - TSTO) payload delivery mission but could be extended to a multipurpose line-up. The second stage gains the needed oxygen via an in flight liquid oxygen collection system (LOX). The hydrogen needed for both stages is obtained via electrolyzation of water (H2O) through a NREL developed wind-turbine conversion principle. The wind turbine blades were also studied in a previous research on structural optimization of smart-blades. The orbiter is based on a volumetric and mass study at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Chris Shakal).
