When you solder or braze, you heat the male end as much as you can before heating the female side. Then when youre hot enough that the flux is sizzling and your solder is melting, you apply some, then use the heat from your torch to lead it where you want it to go. You want it to go at least 2/3 the depth of joint. Practice, practice, practice.. but forget all the peolple talking shxt, you did just fine!
