Why was the answer -3 when we were told the absolute value should always be positive?

I don't get where the expression for "in terms of a" came from. I feel like he didn't explain what formula to use/ how to express in terms of a

in this example: if a=-3 |a-|-3a|| you solve it by 12 but when i put the value of collect a first and then substitute by a=-3 , i get the final answer as -6 how this happen | a - |-3a| | = | a - 3a | = | -2a | = 2a substitute by a=-3 , then |a-|-3a|| = -6

for the last problem with the variable why is the minus sign included in the absolute value bars you have: |a-|-3a|.Shouldn't it be |a|-|-3a|?

Can someone please tell me where I went wrong, I'm really confused. I got -2a.

|a - |-3a|| = |a - 3a| = |-2a| = 2a
substitute a = -3 to get -6 so
|a - |-3a|| = -6 when a = -3
so in terms of a, 6 = -2a, since you have to multiply both sides by -2.
