[CC Available, TW: use of q slur, discussion of miscarriage and physical trauma/vehicle crash] Re: Popular Tumblr Post “Why Tumblr Should Love Frida Kahlo” It occurred to me that while many people are fans of Frida Kahlo, her disability often gets erased from her narrative. So it’s #LetsTalkTuesday, let’s talk about Frida Kahlo!

It is really sad when people erase Frida Kahlo's disability. I've always been an art kid, and we've talked about her a few times in art class. Her disability and chronic pain was a HUGE part of her art. It's literally impossible to understand her paintings without understanding that so many of them are about disability and chronic pain. If you are looking at Frida Kahlo paintings without looking at them through the lense of disability, a good percentage of the time, you are not seeing the painting the way it was meant to be seen. To erase her disability is to fundamentally misunderstand who she was as a person, and it's disrespectful not just to people with disabilities, but to Frida and her art as well.

(As for people I identify with, I'm autistic and my special interest since I was five has been Abraham Lincoln, so I guess that's probably who I'd pick).

Wow, I had no idea she was disabled. Thank you for making this video, it was really interesting and I'll definitely be looking into her more. Happy birthday, Frida! --The Scrivener

So many different identities of Frida Kahlo have been completely suppressed. It's a shame so many people praise her, but shy away from actually understanding the actual complexity and depth of her work. Great video!

I have EDS and I sometimes pray to Frida to help give me strength. It actually helps me feel better.

Thank you for making this video. I dressed as Frida for a masquerade event a week ago. I've read an autobiography about her, seen the movie. Thanks for talking about this so forthrightly.

Frida Kahlo is my muse, my inspiration, my spiritual mother. A large number of my work is Frida inspired. Her life and art made me the artist I am today. Nice video.

Thank you for this! She reminds me almost daily that I am not as limited by my physical disabilities as I often feel - "Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?" 💕

Thank you for making this video! Heard you in the Stuff Your Mom Never Told You podcast today (old episode). I'm so angry this is the first time I'm hearing about her disabilities. But so grateful there are people like you getting the word out! ❤️

yES THIS VIDEO SO MUCH YES... NO ONE. EVER TALKS ABOUT HER BEING DISABLED. much of the people I know who have tumblrs or go to art school tend to completely throw away these facts. They throw away a big part of her and what influenced her so much

She's been a queen to me since I first saw "The two fridas" portrait. I think I was like 7. Ever since I feel in love with art. I look up to her because she was different and didn't care what others thought about her. On top of that she was a total badass 👑💕🌹.

Frida Kahlo was incredible! Have you watched the movie Frida? If so, what did you think about it and her portrait (is that the word you use there???) in it? :)
