You Don't Own Software YOU PAID FOR?! CLAPPING BACK at WRONG INFO in my Comments! - Jody Bruchon

On my Windows 11 videos, I've repeatedly been told by commenters that I NEVER OWNED my copy of Windows or any of my software, even though I paid for it and I can install and remove it whenever I want! In this video, I explain that software licensing and software ownership are NOT the same thing, as well as provide real-world information and examples that clear up misconceptions surrounding the concept of "ownership" (or lack thereof) of software.

Its like people forgot theres a concept called first sale doctrine that limits how much control distributors can have over your individual copy.

But people are trying to get around first sale and consumer rights thru cloud tech, increased DRM, limited streaming and other access gatekeeping.

Great vid.
The unfortunate part is your average end user doesn’t even care about rights and technology anymore. In fact 90 percent of end users see their computer and OS as nothing more than merely a boot loader to the browser. Ofc they don’t feel threatened by the things you speak about in your critiques and concerns against Microsoft. Glorified iPhone computers are the future ?? These people don’t seem to care.

It’s sad cause it’s not a problem of competence or intelligence but of complete apathy.

"You will own nothing, and you will be happy." The fuck I won't...

Reading some comments about this, it's amazing how many people are happy to own nothing, while perpetually paying for it, and be happy about it. Has anyone seen how Pioneer and a few of the DJ equipment supply companies have structured their business models with the software and hardware these days? The software is a subscription model and the hardware won't work without it, despite paying sometimes thousands for the units.

Oh man, you're the best. I just do NOT have the patients to even try to explain these things to people.
Thanks for all the great content.

You a fkn LEGEND!
Recommending people adblock for viewing experience is just the way to go.
Sad but the truth, these days if you really support a creator its the best to show that through donations.

Just ask the German BMW owners about buying a license or subscription to heated seats in the car they just bought.

In the "old days" you were encouraged often needed to create copies or install the software from the disks to another set of disks or harddrive to actually use the software and keep the original somewhere safe.

The really sucky thing is even with a local copy, because of the DMCA they can shut off your access to the software and it would be illegal for you to circumvent that. How messed up is that? That's part of why I just use open source stuff except for games. The software companies that play these games, they can stuff it.

Imagine explaining this to a guy from the 1900s or 1950s. "Well you can buy that phone or that television, but it's designed to break down within 5 years or something and it will be reposessed and you will have to buy a new one. Will that be cash or cash?"

The world is getting collectively dumber by the second.

My issue is this... We cannot trust Microsoft... Google... Twitter... Facebook... possibly Apple... etc. Ever again

I think we should continue this topic and talk about what we can do to prevent such situations we can see for example in Russia today, where people lost the control of their copy of software.

I use Arch, BTW. (LOL)
But seriously, the free and open source software thing is looking more and more appealing by the day, especially with the stupid licencing arguments people are putting forward. The licences for a lot of the free and open source software make it perfectly clear that you own it rather than confusing the confusable into thinking the BS they don't own it.

Hey Jody, Love your videos! Thanks for producing them. I think the "ownership" / "licensing" limitations are mainly to prevent others from making money on what the developer developed. So for example, I could modify Windows for my own use, but I can't sell or even give away what I've produced based my modification of their software and I have to accept the consequences of what I produce (if it "breaks" or "breaks something else, " I can't expect to call Tech Support and get help.).

Thank you, useful videos. I'm getting more drawn to open source software all the time. I haven't taken the plunge into Linux yet but soon..

I think I might add a clause to the EULA of my next product that requires customers to acknowledge that they own the copy of the software I've sold to them and can redownload copies for their personal use in perpetuity, and they must also publicly acknowledge this in the forums. Then if anyone makes the "you only own a license and the publisher can revoke that license at any time" argument in the forums they'll get a 24 hour temporary ban.

Love your delivery of what should be obvious facts, but is lost on most people, and intentionally convoluted by the creators and distributors of said software. Who would have us believe that the license is the same as ownership.
