Stop using liquid & granular softeners.
Use vinegar for softener, works well and eliminates sweat stink.

The old machines were great that you could fill the tub to the water level you needed, not what the washer senses you should have.

I like to soak my shop/vehicle rags in oxi clean, then use vinegar after they've had a bit to soak. Pretty much 5 gallon bucket, hot water, add oxi clean, mix, add rags, wait an hour agitating occasionally, add 1/2 cup of 30% white vinegar concentrate, wait another hour. Once thats all done ring each rag out individually, and rinse each one off. Toss in the machine once they've been thoroughly cleansed of crud.

Doing this I've taken blackened towels from wiping away polishing compound while polishing aluminum, and had the towels look almost new. Plus the vinegar makes the towels/rags soft and supple.

You can make this for super cheap at home. Baking soda, washing soda, sodium perchlorate.
3:2:1 ratio. First two can be found at any grocery / general goods store. Last one can be found in bulk online. Makes oxiclean for like 1/3 the price.

HP is $1 at Walmart and it is liquid which is better for the machine and plumbing.

Also, never use fabric softener. Its bad for you, your clothes, the washer/dryer, and plumbing.
Use vinegar instead

I use cleaning vinegar and baking soda. Works as well.

How do you get all the gross water out though? You just drain it won’t that leave all the gross stuff in there?

My washer unfortunately will drain the water out if it sits too long

I’ve done this over and over and the results don’t change much, the scum is still back there and the scum can never fully be removed until you take it apart. Very easy job. The best way to do it is the remove the tub, there is so much gunk that is caked under the tub that you cannot see until you remove the tub, and the lint filter will be plugged with all kinds of scum. The way they designed this machine is a bacteria breeding ground compared to other style of top loaders, still one of the best washers out there though and fully worth the effort of taking apart and deep cleaning. Doing mine this weekend!

Where did all the gunk at the end come out of?

Acids like vinegar can affect sensitive machines. Everything is made to break

I always thought the cheapest way to get hydrogen peroxide is to buy hydrogen peroxide.

So every time I wash a load of clothes there is this brown residue on there and I believe it's water mold residue or something like that. So I bought affresh washing machine cleaner tablets and I turned on tub clean function on my machine. I did this 3 times and there is still brown residue coming through it. I have also taken apart the pulsator at the bottom and tried to clean the best I can the parts you can't see. What else can I do to get rid of this brown material? I have the same brown residue that you have in the video

Ironically we got scrud flakes coming out when I use oxyclean for laundry or the affresh tablets so will have to do a deep clean or skip the oxyclean for clothes

Did you ever test the tablets and see how they compare to OxiClean?

I have the same washer. Looks like you’ve taken it apart with the missing trim pieces on the end. Did your motor coupler break? Mine did. Easy enough repair and only $15 for the part. Since these machines are from the early ‘00’s I believe. I’ll have to try this and see if how bad mine is. The outside of the tub was clean when I had it apart.
