Rolex developed the Yacht-Master II in 2007, officially releasing it to market in 2010. Initially, the series was only produced in precious metal via references 116688 in yellow gold and 116689 in white gold. Rolex released the first “Rolesor” edition pairing steel with gold the following year in 2011 via the White Rolesor ref. 116681.

It is distinguished by a Ring Command bezel topped with a 10-minute scale, a 10-minute timer on the dial, central hands indicating the countdown timer’s duration, and chronograph pushers above and below the crown.

The Yacht-Master II is an impressive regatta chronograph currently equipped with one of Rolex’s most sophisticated movements ever produced – the calibre 4161. It boasts self-winding, a 72-hour power reserve, chronograph functions, a countdown timer with mechanical memory, and an innovative Fly Back function.

The wearer can use the Yacht-Master II to sync with race start times, and if the countdown is activated too late or too soon, the convenient Fly-Back function will reset it to the nearest minute without stopping the countdown timer. The bezel used to activate these functions is built into the movement itself.

Today, we will teach you exactly how the Yacht-Master II works.

Even though the Yacht-Master II is available in many design set options, its operating instructions remain the same across all variations.

NOTE: The Yacht-Master II has two separate seconds hands, one for the time and one for the countdown mechanism. The centrally mounted seconds hand is for the timer and will not move unless the countdown is activated. The seconds hand for the time of day is presented in the register just above 6 o’clock.

NOTE: Despite featuring a mechanical timer, the actual time-telling function of the Yacht-Master II operates like most contemporary Rolex watches.

HOW TO SET THE YACHT-MASTER II
STEP 1: Unscrew the crown and pull it until you feel a faint click.

STEP 2: Rotate the crown in either direction until the central hour and minute hands display the correct time.

STEP 3: After you set the time, push in the crown. The seconds hand will resume running.
TO SET THE COUNTDOWN TIMER

STEP 1: Rotate the bezel counter-clockwise a quarter turn. You will feel it click into place.

STEP 2: Press the lower pusher – it will remain depressed into the case.

STEP 3: Rotate the crown to adjust the countdown timer hand until it points to the correct amount of time for the countdown.

STEP 4: After the countdown duration is set, return the bezel to its original position by rotating it clockwise a quarter of a turn. The lower pusher will pop back out, locking the countdown timer settings.

STEP 5: Now that the time and countdown timer have been set, push in the winding crown, and screw it back into the case to re-establish the case’s waterproof seal. The movement will not be protected against moisture and dust if you skip this step.

HOW TO USE THE TIMER
STEP 1: Press the top pusher to start the countdown. At this point, the central seconds hand will start circling the dial, and the countdown timer hand will indicate the number of minutes remaining.

STEP 2: Press the top pusher again to stop the timer. Pressing it a third time while the timer is stopped will resume the countdown.

SIDE NOTE: Pressing the lower pusher while the timer is running will engage the Fly Back function and automatically adjust the countdown forward or backward to the nearest minute. This convenient function does not require you to stop the timer.

By pressing the lower pusher while the timer is stopped, the countdown will reset back to its original specified value.

That’s it. You know now how to set the innovative Yacht-Master II. While its predecessor, the Yacht-Master, was developed for use while out at sea, the Yacht-Master II serves as a reliable regatta timer that will ensure you enter the race at the right time, down to the second.

Its design is sleek, sophisticated, and oozes iconic Rolex luxury, and is sought-after by collectors of all lifestyles, not just sailing enthusiasts. Now that you know how to use it, you can enjoy the Yacht-Master II and all that it has to offer.

Very concise and informative.

I have had my yachmaster 2 for 3 years and really wasn’t that familiar with the function which I know sounds pathetic. I just love the watch though!
