Commander Shepard returns in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition! IGN's Ryan McCaffrey and former US Gamer editor-in-chief Kat Bailey got a hands-off demo of the highly anticipated remaster of the sci-fi RPG trilogy and spoke with BioWare. Here's what they thought!

Electronic Art’s Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is slated for a 2021 release and will feature the first three games in the Mass Effect series, along with all DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. Although the release date has not yet been announced, BioWare has confirmed that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will be available on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Playstation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), and PC.

Part of the problem with the whole "Remaster"/"Remake" thing is that people have been misusing these words so much in the last 5 years or so that now people use them, either interchangeably, or with different meanings depending on what's convenient for winning an argument.

She's being honest. Visual upgrades for ME2 and 3 and overhauling the combat and modernizing other aspects for 1. That's all I wanted. I'm so excited for this game!

Changing a game engine (U3 -> U4) would be an actual remake not just a remaster.

The Mass Effect series was a game changer for me in terms of storytelling and world building almost like a Star Wars or Harry Potter. I’m even one of the losers who liked Andromeda. Will 100% be getting this!

I'm not expecting miracles. We've known it's an update from the start, not a remake. Just curious to see how they handle the gameplay in ME1.

Unreal engine 4 would have meant a lot better ambient lighting, full raytracing options, better colours, proper pbr materials etc

Edit: for the record, I still think this looks great all things considered, it's just just a simple res bump, it still has better lighting etc and if they had used unreal engine then they would have had to completely recreate a ton of stuff and it just wouldn't be the same

You can't simply transfer a game to a new engine. That's the equivalent of remaking it almost from scratch. The folks at IGN should know this and their arguments about the engine are silly.
