WD-40 is a well-known multi-use product that’s primarily used as a lubricant, rust preventative, penetrant, and moisture displacer. The name “WD-40” stands for Water Displacement, 40th formula. This means it was the 40th attempt at making a formula that could prevent rust and corrosion by displacing water. WD-40 was first developed in 953 by the Rocket Chemical Company (now known as the WD-40 Company) in San Diego, California. It was originally designed to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion. However, it was soon discovered to have many household and industrial uses, and it became available to consumers in 958.
The exact formula of WD-40 is a trade secret, but it’s made up of various hydrocarbons. While it’s a versatile product, there are specialized products that might perform better in certain tasks. However, the convenience and flexibility of WD-40 have made it a popular choice for a wide range of applications.
