It's so refreshing to see another culture genuinely praises and accepts Lovecraft for all that he was and left behind and builds on his legacy with their own art in an attempt to realize his vision.

What gets me about a good Lovecraft visual adaptation is that the man himself had a fondness for good and effective illustrations to Weird fiction. I've read many letters where he spends the best part of a paragraph praising or evoking the art styles of people like Aubrey Beardsley, (a favourite of his), Sidney Sime, Harry Clarke (who illustrated one of the best Poe collections) Clark Ashton Smith's paintings and sketches, Rops and Doré, and others! When the right artist was found for the right story, Lovecraft was the first to sing its praises.

Another proof that the Japanese understand and adapt Lovecraft in a most respectful and proper manner. With only very few exceptions, all the related literature, films, manga, anime, games, and even music happen to be simply good & actually enjoyable ー as content-wise as quality-wise. And Tanabe is one of their eminent creator.

Those books are brilliant and it’s frustrating Tanabe has done other adaptations but they are not translated yet.

Respect and Gratitude. How refreshing . Manga reflects that trait in its creators, unlike the absolute SJW apocalypse of the Murican Comics Industry. Gonna get these (and see if I can find Haunter in The Dark)! Nice work, bro!

This kind of comics called "Gekiga" rather than "Manga". Gekiga tends to have more realistic visuals and written for adults. Probably it equivalants to the "Graphic Novel" in United States I guess. Just a trivia though...

My girl got me this for our anniversary last year. This manga ripped my mind in two. Some of the art was visually confusing in a way, which served to make me question what i was actually looking at, giving me the impression that i was going insane because of what I was looking at, which is genius for an HPL adaption.

PS, thank you for making your videos. Keep em coming

Gou Tanabe has been on beast mode with these Lovecraft grafic novels in recent years.
He also did adaptations of The Shadow out of Time, The Color out of Space, The Call of Cthulhu and The Shadow over Innsmouth.
They are delight to see, since even in Japan there were no quality manga adaptations for Lovecraft works for long time.

You were the one who got me into Lovecraft, and seeing all these other pieces of media, beside the written word, just makes me wish I had found your channel earlier.

Thanks for the quality content

Hello my friend; Greetings from Missouri in the USA. I only recently discovered your channel (but I'm very glad I did), so I'm a bit late to this party. When I saw this video I immediately went to the links in your video description but got a message saying they are now no longer active, but these two books do appear to be available on Amazon. I hope to have them in about a week. Thank you for doing what you do, and I'm now a happy subscriber to your channel.

Gou Tanabe so far has done Call of Cthulhu the Anthology, Mountains of Madness, Haunter of Dark, Colour out of Space and The Shadow of Insmouth. The dude is great and I hope he does the rest as well.

Since Lovecraft had a descriptive view of these fantastic landscpaes and monsters, that kind of thing needs to be shown in an uncompressed style of storytelling in manga which is why the length is so much for people who don't read manga but for the average manga reader, Tanabe's adaptations are exactly the sweet spot needed to convey all the necessary dialogue(and sometimes a description of the events in text boxes) while showing with just art all those things Lovecraft wrote about, the the way the Colour distorts and how the Blasted Heath looks for example.

Hell yeah! I have his collection of the Hound and other stories that you introduced previously. Looking forward to this one now. Keep up the good work, loved the recent vids. Hails 🤘

I've known about Lovecraft's work for decades spanning back to the original release of the RPG in the early 80's, but for whatever reason I've never read a single story by him.

Seeing this amazing artists style I think I'll finally pull the trigger and pick up all of his English adaptations.

If you cannot get enough of Tanabe’s adaptations, or cannot buy them for whatever reasons, you should check out a channel called *MSA 21.*

Just a week before this comment, *MSA 21* released the eighth part of their audio-animated adaptation of Mountains, using Tanabe’s comic. This is a work that has and will continue to take up well over a year, so stay tuned and subscribed to them. In the meantime, enjoy their previous completed audio-animated adaptations, like Color and Outsider, all using Tanabe’s work!

Excellent videos. You have introduced me to some of my favorite authors, Koji Suzuki and Edgar Allan Poe. Stay safe and well.

The translation is remarkable and reads as if the text were originally written by a native English speaker. And I agree wholeheartedly with your review. This is a masterpiece.

Just purchased after the review. Thanks Arkham Reporter! This is one of my favorite Lovecraft stories, so I'm excited to experience it through this lens. It made me laugh that you were so careful not to spoil anything!
