In this episode of Browns film study, we analyze tape to grade Jedrick Wills' game against the Giants, taking a look at his strengths and weaknesses. The offensive line for the Browns has been very good and Jedrick Wills is no different. While he does have some areas he needs to work on, he is a very promising left tackle.

Solid video man, love the o line breakdown. If it’s not too forward, I’m going to add a few observations to the video if you don’t mind too much.

The plays you say he “steps backwards” on his inside leg is actually a footwork technique. He doesn’t step backwards as much as he picks it up and puts it down (or he should). He does this for a few reasons, one being if that end spikes to the B gap he won’t wiff on the block, letting him and the TE switch guys smoothly. If he were to just step at the playside angle of the play, as a big boy there good chance he wouldn’t be able to adjust just because it’s so difficult to change direction so quickly.
If he were to just step straight up towards the LB, if the End decides to spike C gap, it basically narrows his demeanor, in return widening the gap and making the TE’s job much more difficult to block the end rather than give some body presence to keep that spiking End honest. Could also lead to a double team to the LB with the TE; I’m not sure what they’re schemes/ rules are up front for that play.
That false step also (mostly in my opinion) makes it easier to get your feet going on run blocks for that given run scheme while also keeping the timing with the rest of the line before going up to the second level.
He might be stepping in too much rather going straight up and down, which is why he’s stepping tripping on his Guard who is made to step playside on this scheme.

Just run blocking in general, I agree with what you see but not what you say, if that makes any sense haha. Even in college, it looks like his run blocking runs on an X- axis rather than a Y- axis. Basically he shoves guys and pushes them forwards rather than works lifting guys and leveraging his body underneath the defender. I agree with you that his technique is poor run blocking, and his enormous strength over everyone else in college bailed him out in terms he could run at, shove, catch his feet up, and keep moving defenders like that. At a more elite level, defenders can use that shove- off space to recover and make a play a few yards back from the LOS.
A fix would be to not change anything initially, only to get a tad lower on contact, use his already great inside hand placement to punch and grab rather than extend his arms on contact, wedge yours hips between the ground and defender, extend and run your feet. Maybe work on the double under technique to get a feel for working on the Y axis in run blocking and then being a professional and finding a middle between the two that works best.

We need a 2021 breakdown . I wanna see how much his injury contributed to his regression

Jedrick looks like a solid lineman in the NFL so far. Not extraordinary, not bad but solid. He’s solid in pass pro but run blocking just doesn’t reach the second level well and looks either slow or shy to engage defensive lineman. I think he needs to get stronger in his legs and build his upper body up to become a stronger run game player which in time I think he will do.

I challenge you to make a video using the cowboys footage...like u said that kid was one of best LT’s this season..this one video isn’t enough to be critical

He also has a tendency to forget the snap count in crucial situations.

Great video... have to slightly disagree about him not living up to a top 10 pick. He has not hurt us this year... he plugged a huge hole for us. We would not be where we are right now without him steadying that left side pass protection this year. He’s only getting better from here.

Will he be joe Thomas? Probably not but we don’t need him to be.

Other than that great breakdown, it was nice to get a deeper dive into what he’s doing well and what he needs to clean up. I am really impressed with this content, it’s fantastic.

I think he'll fix a lot of this next year. Pass pro translates to the next level faster than run blocking

tbh left tackle job isnt run blocking. his main job is protect the QB. but i agree he needs alot of work with run blocking. he also slow at times coming off the ball.

Sounds like Jed needs to be coached up by Callahan 🔥 He could be way better in his 2nd year.

He did go from right to left... first year... get him on a strength and conditioning regimen and some experience and he'll be a Pro Bowler...in a couple years.... good stuff...

It's hard to be critical on just one game.

Im not worried about his run block. Hes a natural at pass blk so all he has to focus and work on is run. It will come along. Hes still a baby
