As the CFO of the company, you're looking more into dollars and cents versus what the underlined technology is so you would need a little bit of background in the sense that, "Okay, why do I need a VSAN?" Having a VSAN gives your organization the capability to segregate critical systems from non-critical systems.
For example, if I've got a farm of exchange servers that are supporting, let's say, 50,000 users across the nation. I want to segregate that traffic or that IO from an environment where, let's say, I'm just hosting data for some Cloud offering for my company. In this case, I've got production data that's very critical because it's hosting email services for the entire company and we all know how important email is to our users versus another environment that's not so critical.
What do you do? You can A) buy two different sets of equipment which if you've gone down the route of purchasing fibre channel switches, which as you are aware, it gets fairly expensive pretty fast. Or you can take advantage VSANs so you have the ability to have two different storage area networks residing on the same switch. Your overall investment upfront is significantly less if you were able to go down the VSAN route.
