Great job. The Anytone is definitely one of my favorite radios.

Thanks, Lon. I've been thinking about getting into HAM for some time now. Your experiences should ease that process.

Ive got a little Baofeng handheld that I occasionally listen to a repeater near my house. Its surprising how far some of the repeaters are that this little radio can hit. Need to still get my license so I can actually talk.

Awesome video Lon! I'm very excited to hear about your journey and glad to hear that everybody has been very welcoming and helpful. Hope we get more radio videos in the future. The RF BBS' are great. Pi's the way to go. All our BBS' run on Pi's here in STL. APRS is almost my favorite FM mode on 2M as there is so many things you can do with it. Field Day is coming up June 25 and 26th, which is the biggest weekend for Ham Radio. Hopefully you can stop by some clubs Field Day setup and get on HF that weekend to test the waters for your General license. 73 Kyle AA0Z

One of your old videos guided me through moving disks to my new DS420+ a few weeks ago. Thank you for that.
Congratulations on embarking on your amateur radio journey!!!
The AnyTone 878 series is a good choice for beginners, conforms with the buy-once-cry-once principle. May help beginners to hold off splashing out on iCOM and the like for HTs.

Packet radio, I ran a BBS system on my C64 in the early 90's for a couple years. Miss packet radio.

Great job Lon, thanks for the video! Been an amateur operator for 50 years and you taught me something new. That is the beauty of the hobby. We were on a sailing trip in the Caribbean and used Winlink to send emails back home. Lots of fun. Be careful, this stuff is addictive. Scanning my office I have 3 handheld radios, an Anytone, Yaesu, and an Icom. Again, I look forward to your upcoming adventures in radio.

I salute your enthusiasm Lon, in your approach to ham radio and the modes available to use. Back in the 80's I communicated regularly with the Soviet space station Mir on 2 meter packet radio. It was very exciting. Good luck with the hobby and thank you for your spreading the word.

Great video. I love the way you are presenting what you learn about amateur radio. Maybe make a playlist for this.

I love the video and had a great laugh looking at your shelves behind you with the Sinclair computer and original Atari joystick. DMR is like voodoo to me, it just boggles my 65 yr old mind at this point. You've progressed at an phenomenal rate! Basically 5 years of Amateur Radio in just a couple of months. Wow. Keep up the great content!

Glad to see you really taking this in. DMR and APRS are my favorite modes. I used to work satellites with the same arrow antenna. One small correction, it's a diplexer, not duplexer. The difference is a diplexer allows for more that one band to be operated through a single feedline, but only one transmitting at a time. A duplexer operates in the same band and can have transmitting and receiving happening at the same time. Maybe I can catch you on the CT Statewide talkgroup some time. Jason K4APR

GREAT VIDEO. Im in the market for a radio. I grew up listening to static as my Dad, and Grandpa are ham operators. I told myself i would NEVER get into it. But the SDRs, and technology today has me very interested. I like to listen to the local repeaters on my Baofeng. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for more great content! Loving the HAM radio material especially. I just passed my technician exam tonight! Told my wife who is non tech person at all and her response was “why, you have a cell phone?” SMH

Hi, I found with positioning very directional antennas --> put them on a stable camera TRI-POD [super helpful!] ( I made a custom mount to attach the antenna to the camera mount).

Really helped a lot... I was really confused on what to say when I am communicating with ISS for the first time :) Thank you,

Really fun is when you get temperature inversions and can have funky propagation with a handheld.. was talking to someone in Florida from BOS
