I like the distinction that dominance is a leadership quality and not an abusive characteristic. Those that do not have the leadership quality will demand respect because they think they deserve it. A man that demands respect without a basis for it will surely turn abusive.

I personally love it when my man is a leader because I feel emotionally, physically and mentally safe. I know that he won't use my vulnerabilities against me. However, as of now I've experienced the latter. But I'm hopeful that not all men are like this.
