Learn about Meshnet’s features and permissions!

The permissions are essential to making the most of NordVPN’s Meshnet. Find out how they work and what they’re needed for. Meshnet connects multiple devices securely and for free.
There are four permissions: remote access, file sharing, traffic routing, and local network access. Remote access lets devices in your Meshnet network access your services or remote desktops. File sharing allows device-to-device file transfers. Traffic routing lets your computer act as a gateway. Local network access lets Meshnet peers access other non-Meshnet devices through your PC.

Quick reminder:

Any Meshnet-connected devices can be provided with permissions, but this can only be done for the currently used device. This means you can only adjust permissions for incoming connections and cannot change access permissions for a device unless you have direct access to it.

Remote access permission:
Enabled by default for all new devices but can be adjusted in the permissions menu. It allows other devices within your Meshnet network to access services or file shares on your machine, which is useful for Remote Desktop or game server access. For Linux-based systems using Docker, local network access permission is also needed to access containerized services.

File sharing permission:
Enabled by default and allows devices within your Meshnet network to share files. Some devices have a separate permission to automatically accept all incoming transfers. However, for sharing network-mapped drives or folders, you need to use the remote access feature instead of the built-in file-sharing feature.

Traffic routing permission:
Enables other Meshnet devices to use your computer as a gateway to your local network. This permission, available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux, allows you to route your traffic through another Meshnet peer, sharing the same IP address as your routing endpoint. Keep in mind that traffic routing speeds depend on the internet upload and download speeds of the devices involved.

Local network access permission:
Allows Meshnet peers to access devices on your network by routing their traffic through your PC. This is particularly useful for accessing devices that don’t support Meshnet, such as IP cameras, printers, or other IoT devices.
