What is Sepsis? (Life-threatening Infection)

Показать описание
Sepsis is the condition in which the body overprotects itself from infections, illnesses and diseases. It is a life-threatening disease that arises from an overreaction of the immune system while trying to fight an infection.
Sepsis is due to a release of chemicals from the immune system into the bloodstream as an infection is being attacked. The chemicals attack the whole body and cause an inflammation instead. If a case of Sepsis is severe, it may lead to septic shock that calls for a medical emergency.
The symptoms of Sepsis manifest depending on the stage of the condition. It progresses from sepsis, severe sepsis, to septic shock depending on the level of infection. The symptoms include a high fever, heart rate higher than 90 beats, high pulse rate, decreased urination, unconsciousness, problematic breathing and changes in mental ability.
The causes include abdominal infection, pneumonia, kidney infection and infection in the bloodstream. People who are more at risk are those with weak immune systems, children, older people and those with higher antibiotic resistance. The disease is not contagious and is treated with antibiotics, painkillers and corticosteroids.
