How to Design an Ergonomic Kitchen
Here are some tips to create a smart kitchen that ensures good work flow, improves the efficiency and allows stress-free cooking

The function of an ergonomic kitchen is to increase productivity and make it comfortable to prepare meals without wasting time and energy.

Note that you do not have to dismantle an existing kitchen; Instead you can one rearrange the existing kitchen and make it more efficient. This will allow you to multitask between different kitchen activities and reduce unnecessary body movements that cause fatigue.
The first step is to divide the kitchen into five zones according to the kitchen functions and organise each zone efficiently.

1. Zone no. 1- Cooking area
The cooking area comprises of the cooktop and the chimney.

o All the frequently used pans and cooking utensils should be close to the cooktop or preferably just underneath it.
o Make sure that there is free countertop space on the left and right of the cooktop for placing hot pots and pans after cooking.
o Add task lighting over the cooktop and most chimneys come with built-in lighting.
o Install wall-hung accessories or open shelves near the cooktop for quick and easy access to common kitchen ingredients like salt, pepper, basic spices, tea, coffee, sugar and so on.
o
2. Zone No. 2 -Food preparation zone

o One section of the countertop should be used for food preparation. The essential everyday utensils like chopping boards, spices and oils should be stored in this area.
o There should be sufficient lighting in the food preparation zone. Make provision for LED downlights or strip lights under the wall-mounted cabinets to illuminate the countertop.
o Create an unobstructed path between the cooktop, sink and refrigerator for a good workflow.

3. Zone No. 3- Cleaning area
o This area accommodates the dishwasher and the sink. All the cleaning supplies should be in the under-sink area for easy access.
o Keep 3 feet of countertop space on one side of the sink for drying utensils and segregating the soiled and clean vessels.
o Choose a faucet as per the size of the sink so that the water does not splash outwards onto the countertop or the floor.
4. Food storage

o There should be a refrigerator for keeping perishable food items and storage cabinets for the non-perishable food items.
o Keep at least 3 feet countertop space near the refrigerator, so that the food can be easily removed from the refrigerator and placed on the countertop when the refrigerator is open.
o Dedicate one cabinet for storage of non-perishable food items.
o Arrange the food items properly so that everything is visible at one go and there is no difficulty in searching for kitchen ingredients.
o The tall cabinet should be placed on one end of the kitchen so that it does not break the continuity of the kitchen countertop.

5. Main storage
The main storage area includes storage for dishes, serving plates, glasses and cutlery.

o Have differently-sized drawers with different depths for keeping utensils as per their sizes.
o All the frequently used items should be placed in the top drawer and seldomly used items should be kept in the overhead cabinets above a level of 7 feet.
o Store items as per their weight: heavy items should be at a level somewhere in between one’s hip and shoulder, medium-weight items should be kept below the heavy items and the light items such as plastic boxes should be kept below the medium-weight items.
o Group the electrical appliances like the toaster, juicer and blender together and park them in a single cabinet instead of keeping them on the countertop. This will create an organised and clutter-free space in the kitchen.
o Make the kitchen look cleaner with kitchen organisers. They will help you to save valuable kitchen space and also make your kitchen look aesthetically more pleasing.
