Hi Friends, today I review the Slate Virtual Microphone System (VMS). With the VMS Slate is trying to bridge the gap between professional studios and home recordists, by making the classic sound of the most sought after vintage microphones available to everyone. Sorry to say the audio converted to mono, the audio samples which you can download are all in stereo! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Thanks for the in depth contrast Warren. I bought a VMS, and am VERY happy with it. Simply put, the bang for the buck is off the charts. It has sidelined my Sterling ST 6050 Ocean Way, my Peluso U47 Modified Sputnik, and my AKG C414 XL II as it is simply much more versatile than any of these. I don't have the luxury of buying many several thousand dollar plus mic's, and the few I do own, aren't as good as the VMS. Just the clean unadulterated mic signal, through the Pre is solid enough on it';s own for the price of a grand.

Start at 18:55 and listen for the clean acoustic sound comparisons. The rest is cloudy/muddy.

This is cool! Next Slate could make a pair of monitor that you can chose how they sound like NS-10, Genelec, Adam, Events...

I'm listening on laptop speakers, because I'm hospitalized. I'm baffled by how much I can actually hear. Your comments pretty much affirmed what I thought about the two different sounds. I won't start mixing on my laptop speakers, but I don't think we give enough credit to how much of the nuance by different gear can actually be heard on a cheap sound system.

Man I was very surprised to see how much you change the sound of the vms by adjusting the drive and intensity. It really sounds like you think an analogue circuit would when being driven. Sounds freakin great for the money! Great job Steven! And thanks Warren!

This is very cool technology and great for a bedroom producer. Slate makes great stuff. But man, a microphone is one thing I'd rather not have reliant on software.

There's some great and affordable mic manufacturers out there if one were to dig around. Advanced Audio makes a "CM12" and I have a pair. Killer. Warren, you should check them out. Let us know what you think.

Keep up the marvelous work. :)

Warren, it's been years since anything inspired me at the level as you passion for music is doing. It's taken our band and music to another level, if I might say it myself. Thx a lot for doing what you are doing.

Bringing up that intensity halfway did it for me. WOW, That's some incredible modeling! Thanks for the video!

I've learned the way a mic hears off axis sounds and the way it picks up the room is what makes it special

at u47 your singing pitch is little up and in vms your pitch is good ! This singing difference will gives variation in frequency response !

In the mix VMS sounds better to my ear its a little more sharper in detail, but i think you could use the analog preamp instead of the slate FG-73 it would be almost unnoticeable.

The pre amp emulation is in the wrong place, shouldnt it be after the mic not before. you do great videos warren thanks for the education.

Hey Warren! Awesome video! Would you consider the slate mic a good all around studio workhorse perhaps better suited than say a 414 or something? It seems like it would be to me. Also what headphones do you use thanks!

Thanks for the shootout, especially for multiple takes and tracks as small differences and characteristics become more obvious. Technical aspect aside, i think that you can hear real u47 sound more natural, it's not just the eq specter, it sounds more "real" if that's the right word. VMS losses that smoothness in the lower mid side.
But i'm also interested in effect of analog gear (BEA preamp) versus digital (slate one). I know it's not the right use, but it would be cool to try and connect VMS analog preamp output to BEA preamp (for color) and than in apollo, so that in protools you engage just the mic simulation without neve simulation. It's all about the creativity right?
I don't now if you have the time or will to do this but if you're interested try. Whatever you decide, thanks again for the shootout.

Hi, Warren.  Hope you are having a marvelous day. :).  If you had a choice for recording "acoustic" between the "Lewitt 940" or the "Slate virtual mic system" (any mic), which would you choose?  This is just for acoustic guitar and then Ill ask the same quetion but for an electric guitar cabinet (AC30-Type, clean tones?  No Pressure. LOL
