New 2020 Renault ZOE - could this 242-mile supermini be the most affordable EV ever?

This is the new Renault ZOE, the latest version of Europe’s best selling electric car. Redesigned inside and out, Renault says the new electric supermini is capable of 242 miles on a single charge thanks to its larger 52kWh battery.

Despite being the biggest update applied to the ZOE since its seven years on sale little has changed on the outside. The ZOE remains exactly the same size as it was before. Instead of changing the recipe too much Renault has opted for a small redesign, adding a new front bumper, C-shaped LED headlamps and additional chrome detailing.

Why say most affordable yet but make no mention of the cost...?

Not quite as revolutionary as I hoped though the interior looks nice. The extra range is handy rather than being a reason to upgrade my ZE40 and the same goes for the CCS charging. I've only had to charge away from home five times in 15000 miles and that could have been covered by using a 3 pin plug at the destination in three of those cases. Having said that I have been very pleased with my Zoe and I imagine anyone buying the new one will be delighted too (assuming a good deal is on offer).

So, 242 miles = 390 Km WLTP.
Expecting an 80% of the advertised WLTP gives: 310 Km of range using 52 KWh energy.

52 KWh * 0.25 euro/KWh = 13 euro

which gives: 4.2 euro / 100 Km or 2.6 lt / 100Km (1.6 euro / lt )

This looks like a huge upgrade from the previous generation renault zoe interior quality wise. For the old Zoe they tried to cut costs so they could sell it at a reasonable price but the problem was that it was still quite expensive ~33.000 euro before any state reduction for electric cars and the car had the interior and options of a 9.000 euro car. The new one seems like it is a car in the price range it has.

I like it. The outgoing Zoe wasn’t bad but the interior does feel a bit cheap. This looks much better

Battery rental is like £55 a month which is twice what my Aygo uses in petrol. Shame really because I love the idea of an EV.

absolutely love the new interior and sportier exterior. I'm still curious as to why the previous gen was so popular when it didn't have fast charging or much range but with this new one, there's no question the sales success will continue

Much better interior. Let's hope that the new communication unit is much better than the cheap outdated RLink
