Nice explanations! Rocking the new wheels 😉

Really happy to hear Jonathan's opinion about hot staging and the volume of engineering changes.

Excitement guaranteed!

I think the main reason hot staging will make it more efficient to get to orbit is that the exhaust builds pressure between the stages while they are in close proximity and this will accelerate their separation giving the upper stage a boost at the expense of the lower stage losing velocity which it needs to do anyway to return to earth.

Jonathan expressed concern about Elon not "doing the engineering" related to hot staging. Unlike launching and flying the full stack, there actual tests Elon can run to test the shielding. Note that he did just that to test watercooling a steel plate as prep for the new base for the orbital launch mount.

Thanks for summarising the many wise words we heard from Jonathan McDowell on hot staging into this video Ellie, it's like having a souvenir from the livestream.

I think we can now not only understand what is planned, but we can also visualise it too thanks to this content. Whether hot staging works out for Starship remains to be seen, but witnessing the 2nd test flight will be all the more exciting whatever the outcome.

Thank you for putting this together Ellie! It is a great recap of Jonathan's thoughts and I watched this wearing my new Ellie shirt!!! Absolutely LOVE the shirt!!!!

Most of those thousand changes are probably due to the switch from hydraulic to electrical power for the center engine deflection. Since they are removing the hydraulic power sources (the two tanks which got destroyed by the engine failures the first time around), everything in the booster that uses hydraulic power has to be switched to the electric equivalent.

This was a great video, learned a lot

I'm surprised noone has thought of staging using the header tanks feeding the three sea level raptors on the starship after stage separation, then while under positive aceleration switching over to main tanks while simultaneously topping up the header tanks for landing burn.

Ellie I really enjoyed your discussion with Jonathan.
I'm definitely concerned about the hot staging, but staying optimistic. By the way your new Tesla looks out of this world 🌎 🚀 😅

Glad you are healing well was very worried about you, 🙏🙏🙏 hope you are enjoying the Texas heat, love this many ways to fail with a launch video

"hot staging" is a rather new expression for a stable separation, required to have attitude control of the upper stage, which is required to compensate from uneven moments due to uneven release forces .
when the atmospheric density is not zero the uncontrolled upper stage will turn side ways, because there are no stabilizing fins ..
If you look at other rockets the structure holding the stages together is a open frame work to allow the upper stage to use engine gimballing as soon as the engine has developed the required thrust, before cutting the joint mechanism, triggered by the first stage engines's shutdown.
This process can only be predicted by simulation on a computer. A task I participated on a small ICBM at General Dynamics Convair.

Great update, I needed some gaps filled. Ready for the next launch and your coverage 👍

Thank you Ellie. I appreciate all your efforts. ❤. I think it's gonna work just fine. Either way Starship is advancing.

Perhaps they should use a collapisable bag to keep the fuel from mixing with the pressurization gas which keeps them from mixing and the bag of fuel always appear full to the engine.

Would love to see your future post Starship flight analysis comparing SpaceX operational execution against the currently reported many known failure modes to achieve orbit.

Got any great road trips planned for your new customised touring wheels 😊

It seems like they should be able to time it so that the 1st stage shuts off as the hot stage begins….. or at least find the optimal point of shutdown…

Interesting... is it a good idea to make a radical changes like that so quickly? I suppose this must have been a plan B from the beginning.
