Turns out you don't need the square rule if you can just see 8 moves ahead at any given point

Magnus is great. He didn’t need to say that. But he did anyway.

The fact that he knew it instinctively but didn't know the rule is pretty insane in and of itself

It's the little victories that make a good day

For anyone wondering, the "square rule" refers to a pawn that's in its way to promote but you don't know if it's going to get taken by the king. It states that if you form a square placing the pawn on one of the ends and up to the 8th row and the king is not on that imaginary square, then your pawn is safe to promote. Keep in mind that this rule changes if there are other pieces involved, that's why this is mostly applied on endgames where there's just pawns and kings like the clip they show of Andrea explaining the rule.

Magnus has a weird habit of answering questions like a politician would 😂

I learned the rule of the square from David’s forehead

It seems to me that Magnus's brain worked so fast that he would instantly know if the king is in range or not, but he had no idea how he knew that 😂

Magnus might get away with not knowing the square rule for a while, but eventually it will catch up with him, especially if he tries for the master title one day.

This is why he's the best of what he does. He's willing to learn anything from anybody. I tried to teach somebody rocket league, and they were bronze rank. I was trying to give them the roadmap to get to diamond, and they were trying to act like they knew better than me. SMH.

This was the moment Magnus learned about the rule of the square

If a master is humble to recognise he doesn't know something he is a great master.

and he successfully dodged the question

He also was in an endgame demonstration video, maybe 10 years ago, where the square was discussed using Dvoretsky's book and he said "I don't understand it".

"I didn't understand that you actually have to make a square."

He's contemplating the relevance of the 3 lines other than the one closest to the king.

This happens too in math. For example: some people can take the roots of a quadratic equations without knowing the quadratic formula. They can still do it. But if you teach them the quadratic formula, they’ll be able to plug in all the values in a calculator and get the answer without having to load their brain with the process of solving it. There is an advantage to being good at the manual method though. If something doesn’t entirely fit the preconditions to use the shortcut, the person that only ever does it manually will have an easier time of figuring it out. The person that got used to the shortcut would take a bit longer to go back to their roots. Which is probably why Magnus is so good.

It’s like teaching a wizard a card trick. He’s already beyond that and its irrelevant to his performance 😂

While they can have emotional flaws like any other being one thing I notice with really really really really smart people is that they are not ashamed of learning something new or being taught they are wrong about something.
