Whenever this happened to me, there was usually a $20 in the $10 spot in the drawer

If that was me, as a cashier I would immediately count my drawer to see if I’m short or over. That’s the best way to tell

Where I worked, we had to place the customer's money across the drawer and couldn't put it away till we gave them their change. It was highly enforced. We had very few money issues.

That is really smart of course if you don't know the serial number and the manager probably have to shut down the drawer and count it it should be $10 over

I call b.s.
I did need to protect myself as a cashier though. When people handed me money I would lay it across the till on top of the money slots, that way when the scammer customer tried to pull the I gave you a 20 when they gave me a 10 I could just lift up the bill so they can see it was a 10. One guy, one time, doubled down at that point so I was like hang on a sec, ill grab the manager, because he had just come in, it was close to the end of my shift so we counted down the drawer in record time super fast. Scammer left a loser.

This happens pretty often. And in both directions (scammer customers, and thief cashiers).

Mine was in a vr game called Gorilla Tag and I’m a ranked player, do when I found this extremely toxic, but decently skilled player, I absolutely destroyed them and he even admitted that I completely stopped him and that he should not do that to people without knowing there skill. I showed him lol. (Also, people where cheering for me for what I did)

Happened to me once, but in the opposite direction. Waaay back when you could buy multiple things for less than $10, I bought a bag of groceries and handed the checkout girl a $10, and she broke change like it had been a $20. Told her I'd only given her a $10, and she looked at her register and realized what she'd done, and I returned the extra $10. It's both surprising and depressing to see peoples' reactions to simple acts of honesty. Apparently it doesn't happen much any more.
