👉 Why is it called the schwa? 👈 - You ask, I answer. #vowels #pronunciation #phonology

The schwa /ə/ is the most common sound in English. It is the mid-central vowel sound and you can find it in the middle of the vowel chart. Just relax and produce a short sound as if you don't understand something:
"Eh?"
Exactly, that's it! 😊👍 It is represented by the symbol of the letter 'e' rotated by 180°. It is a very short sound that only occurs in unstressed syllables.
But why does it have such a strange name? German linguists came up with that. The term 'schwa' is derived from the Hebrew word 'shwa'. So there, you go! It's not even an English word, which explains the strange spelling. Within words the schwa could be spelt with an: a, e, i, o, u or y - and it could even be unwritten! It's a funny little sound!
