Sometimes you just have to see what this baby can do!

Full thrust takeoff is sooo good. I love getting pushed back in my seat, feeling all that power when I get on a flight.

I was a Marine Corps maintenance officer for years and we did a deployment for training to the other side of the country. We chartered a 757. Aircraft was completely stuffed with people, tools and gear. Pilots went full send on takeoff. The landing gear was completely in the wheel wells halfway down the runway and we were climbing at a steep angle. I’ve flown on everything a lot. To this day I have never experienced that impressive of thrust as I have on that 757. I’ve heard that pilots love that aircraft and that it’s the “sports car” of commercial aviation.

I've been an Avgeek my whole life and the 747 is one plane I always wanted to fly on. I finally got that chance in the mid 90s flying to Buenos Aires. The plane was a 747-200 (LV-OOZ) from Aerolineas Argentinas. On the return trip from EZE to MIA, we made a stop in Punta Cana and nearly everyone got off. From Punta Cana to Miami there were maybe like 40 passengers on board so I bounced around to different seats and got an awesome view from each one. What an experience!

The amount of things you have to learn early to never do again at this point really gives you an appreciation for where you started

In 1995 I was in a packed jet on a beautiful day taking off from Vancouver to Toronto. I’ve been on lots of flights before, and I’m not a nervous flyer. But even I didn’t expect that takeoff. I don’t know why there was a fire under the pilots butts but, we had to takeoff like that. He went off like a rocket, and we went up at an angle I am not accustomed to. We were all pushed back into our seats. It’s like he had to get up and around as fast as possible with the rout they gave him. So as soon got going up, he went up out over the coast and did a very steep turn and came almost right back around and then headed east. I remember being on the upper side of the plane in the turn and I looked down the row seats and all I could see was ocean off that other wingtip. It was amazing. Just amazing! We were at a very steep bank from what I could see, although I know planes can only do so much. But it felt like we were at a very steep angle, and looked that way too. There was no way anyone would’ve been able to walk down the aisles or even get up out of their seats. It was amazing! it must’ve scared the crap out of other people though. Since then I’ve seen that pilots will do this if they have an empty plane, no passengers sometimes they’re allowed to. I just don’t know why but this day they had to get up and around as fast as possible. I’ve never had to takeoff like that since. Now, if you’re a first time flyer or a nervous flyer, that would’ve just scared the hell out of you. It was quite the ride. I deeply suspect the pilots had alot of private enjoyment being able to let it rip!

As an active duty Ranger coming out of Honduras with a team, we were flown in a small passenger jet by a Honduran pilot. He took that thing up as fast as he could, and it was a ride not to forget. I had been on a B52 once on a hop, and that thing went right up also, but that ride in the from Honduras was amazing. Thr captain flying us was flying his last mission before leaving flight status, and asked us lf we were game. All but one said he'll yes, but then he said f- it. We had spent 4 month in another jungle, and were all glad to be leaving. Forget a Rollercoaster, if you ever get the chance take it.

First time i ever flew was from Hong Kong to Heathrow back in 1978. I can still remember like it was yesterday. Old Kai tak airport full thrust and pushed me back in my seat. Best feeling ever.. Onward to Calcutta. Levelling up and landing not as good as take off. I have flown many times since, but non compare to that first flight on a 747. Such joy!!

I learned something new today. I never knew anything like this calculation existed. In one minute you explained it very well. Thanks

I got to deliver a 747-400 from San Francisco to Chicago O'Hare airport for scheduled, routine maintenance -- so light on fuel, no passengers, just two pilots. Could we have made a reduced thrust D-TO 2 takeoff? Well, usually, yes, but one restriction was that the jet had to make a Max Thrust (Normal thrust) takeoff at least once every 30 days -- and it had been more than 30 days, so MAX THRUST and play rocket ship on that flight. Life is (was and will continue to be) GOOD!

As a flight simmer, I love it when you point out those technical parts of aviation like the D-TO 2. Still don't know quite what it means, but I know just a little bit more. Keep up the good work.

As an ATP you are probably aware that this is not a "vertical" departure! The aircraft is climbing at a fairly steep angle, but it is not a "Viking" ( Air Force for vertical or 90 degrees) departure. That sort of maximum performance is left to the fighter jets which will have a greater than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio. Good day to you sir.

Built and driven a few Ford Cobras at 500-650 horsepower at 2250 lbs I can say taking off in a commercial airliner is amazing considering the weight. Then landing and on the brakes it's mind blowing counting just the weight on people. Much respect to all!

That looks like fun. I love take offs when it’s really cold out, because it really pushes you back into your seat

back in the day, when the VC-10 was the 'muscle car' of airliners, the pilots used to do that just to show who's boss, also to impress passengers . A VC-10 could be at almost 10, 000 feet when a 707 would still be trundling down the runway .

We often got ‘routine’ maintenance jobs from SFO in ORD. Things like a brake change come to mind. The SFO guys couldn’t bring themselves to change a brake in 40 degree weather so they sent it to us, where it was 5 degrees and wind chills of -20. This happened many times.
Regarding max thrust empty weight takeoffs, the RB 211 powered 757 has no equal. Flew jump seat from Fayetteville Arkansas to Bangor Maine on one. It was night, but I just fixated on the altimeter and my watch. We were passing through 10, 000 ft AGL before we hit 60 seconds. Pretty damn impressive.
