I did this to all the visible beams in my house. After the wire brush on an angle grinder I used basically the same tool, but instead of brass wire it was made from "abrasive plastic wire" if that makes any sense. Don't know how to describe it any better. This leaves a very smooth surface, no sanding required and it gets into all the narrow spaces between the growth rings.
