In the very early game, placing a couple assemblers and setting them to gears and copper wire - without using any sort of inserters to feed them - will help speed up your hand crafting. Generally, you should build a basic mall around the time you set up green science. Gradually expand it over time as new recipes get unlocked and your demands grow. You should probably automate red belt a while before you automate red undergrounds and splitters because it'll be a decent while before you need those in volumes beyond what you can hand craft.

I'd add both types of pipes, gunturrets, miners, med poles to a basic mall. And it should be built before blue science. Ammo, walls and grenades can be taken from gray science.

If you're going to set up a train system, definitely add steel chests, basic signals, big poles and train tracks, at a minimum.

Better than limiting your chest, use buffer/storage chests and logistically limit inserters to only insert below certain treshold of items. Then set your chest to request the items it's for. That way, any time you overshoot how many items you need, they will go back to their place and won't basically gather dust in your main storage. Nice, clean and it saves some resources.

I use Buffer chests to have all the items in few tiles radius.
You can never have enough Negotiation Tools or Spiders..

Dont only limit your chests. Limit the Amount inserters can put into the overall Logistic Network or you will overproduce A LOT.
