The scariest location in subnautica is anywhere where you can't see beneath you

The scariest place is the dunes. That first time hearing "Detecting multiple Léviathan class form in the location, are you sure WHATEVER you're doing is worth it?"

Like, the AI is giving you snark about how you're playing with life rn

there was actually going to be a hole going straight down to the active lava zone and when you first find it, a sea dragon leviathan would rise up and bite down on a reaper leviathan which would confirm that sea dragons ate reapers

Honestly, I think that the back of the aurora is the scariest place in the game. Being in that reddish/grey water with reapers all around you truly gives you the chills. The dead zone is pretty scary too, but at least the reapers there are glowing and don't sound as scary.

edit: After killing all the reapers in the crash zone, mountains, and the dunes, I reconsider my decision. I have gone into the void and never again shall I commit such a crime. That place is truly terrifying.💀

Fun fact, apparently that skeleton is from a juvenile Gargantuan Leviathan
Edit: never mind, apparently the one shown is an adult Gargantuan Leviathan skull and there is one that I never knew about

Imagine if they made a third game and after some point in time you’ll accidentally unleash a gargantuan leviathan and occasionally during your run an event may occur where you’ll have to hide and avoid getting caught by the leviathan and its location at which it goes to dont matter and the only way of detecting it being near is through sound which will make that “did i just hear it or not” situation much more stressful and add more anxiety into the game

The scariest place is the front of the aurora 😭
You can barely see, there’s a reaper, and and everything is shaking

Honestly the scariest place for me is the Dunes, it’s just an endless stretch of sand and big deep open water with something off in the distance hunting you, stalking you… waiting. The simplicity of this biome is what instills the terror.

I have no need to fear anything anymore. I went to the borders of all the biomes, and set up highly stocked, small mini bases I call scanning stations. Whenever I need something rare that can only be found in a few biomes, I go to a scanning station on its border or I set up a new one if I haven’t done so yet, scan for the resource, send my camera drones out to scout the locations of the leviathans, then I go get it once the area is clear

I feel like the scariest location has evolved as the game grew. Early players would say the Aurora, then the lost river and ghost biome got added. For me the scariest biome is the ghost forest biome. Mainly because I was getting gel sacks on a ledge down there and it was pitch black. I remember I turned around to get back in my seamoth and coming up from the pitch blackness was a warper swimming right up at me. Now I was already terrified of Warpers but it was so close and so unexpected I nearly had a heart attack 😂 any time I go down there now I’m just waiting

I would like to add that the gargantuan skeleton in lost river are most likely from a juvenile.

Bro you could've called it "the lost rivers bone zone"

It's crazy how we tend to get scared by sea easier than when we on land because of how little of knowledge we know about the sea

Years before subnautica launched and wven more years before i even started playing i was pronounced dead in the back of an ambulance for a few mins, the inbetween of life and death to me looked exactly like the void, dark deep ocean with screams of far yet close predators. Even today after all this time the void is still the scariest thing I've seen because to me, thats the closest thing to death ive seen in media

My worst was always the bottom of the floating islands valley, its dark full of lava and loud dangerous noises but all it has is bonesharks, ive been jumpscared at that base more than the entire game

Subnautica players: Could the void be any scarier?
Subnautica modders: Give us five minutes...
