Since it was in beta, one can assume that the peeper is the default skin for all of the fish. The leviathans you encounter in the lava zone are the sea dragons, so what if in the beta, the sea dragon skins weren't made yet and it used the default peeper? It's a thought.

Edit: not sure why this comment blew up but lemme clear some stuff. After reading replies it seems logical to assume it may not entirely be my theory, however it could still apply based on perhaps a glitch or bug. Otherwise a cool concept, i love the game, and bye.

There have been numerous mod projects in the past that add giant leviathans. I recall one person just upscaling the size of a standard peeper. I believe even the developers thought of making a leviathan peeper once but scrapped the idea. There is a mod in development for Subnautica called "Return of the Ancients" that has a fully modeled Leviathan Peeper with glowing eyes and all.

I played this game religiously for a while and I was always scared and rushing. Until one day I had to collect stalker teeth and stalkers aren’t all that deadly. I found myself sitting on a nice ledge overlooking these stalkers picking up metal fragments and swimming around. It was nice peaceful and serene. All this in a game that I was so scared to explore. It was a nice break
