A quote from blood meridian I love is “when a lamb is lost in a mountain they cry. Sometimes come the mother. Sometimes the wolf.” Be careful who you run into

Appalachia is no place to be off the road. I'm from Alabama and my dad was from Appalachia. Most folks in the mountains are nice people. Some are not.

No human is afraid of being alone in the dark. We’re afraid we are not alone when it gets dark.

We have mountain men. Be careful, it's not unheard of for people to be attacked for their resources. If you're camping in the actual wilderness, also be prepared for humans as well as wildlife.

I was camping in the appalachians with 2 dogs. I woke up real late one night in the tent to my dogs absolutely alert but not barking. I unzipped my tent just a tiny bit and saw a truck with 2 men parked next to my car. I grabbed my gun but my dogs at that point finally went ballistic barking and the truck took off fast as hell.
I will never camp without my gun or dogs.

Another time I was hiking out there my dog all of a sudden bolted from me. I looked over and about 50 yards away she had jumped up and bit a naked dude staring at us from a ridge up above! I love this god dam dog

The best thing he did was pull up his camera...We all know the cameraman never dies.

When your camping at night, try to avoid using a light source (when feeling creeped out).
You turn yourself into a Christmas tree.

This one is so freaky. An Army buddy of mine got killed on Appalachian trail by some schizophrenic. He also stabbed a girl but she survived. Broke my heart. He was such a nice guy. He had bad ptsd and hiking helped him to heal.

True story,

Mom and I (I was 19) were camping in the Redwoods, we had a nice man at the campsite right next to us, he was very nice and caused no problems.

One day, the park ranger drives by and tells us not to worry, they had nabbed the escaped convict. Yup, it was the nice guy camping mere feet from us.

I’m from Alabama. I hike mt. Cheaha a lot alone. Always have a gun and always leave before sundown. There’s some strange people around.

I grew up in a tiny town in the Appalachians, and as a kid we weren't allowed outside at all on our own. Our school bus wouldn't even let us off if our parents weren't at the house. And my town was pretty safe for being in the mountains.

i'd be extremely cautious in the woods out here, i've lived in Appalachia my whole entire life. in eastern and central KY, to be specific. if you're not an experienced outdoors person already, familiarize yourself with the animal noises you're likely to encounter. carry bear mace and a machete if you don't want to carry a gun. and never, ever hike alone out here after dark. its too easy to get yourself killed out here, and people do it every year. the terrain changes suddenly, you can walk right off a cliff trying to take a piss at night. even experienced outdoors people, and natives, die out in these woods. the Appalachian wilderness should be respected, there are known threats, and possibly unknown threats as well

Lol as someone who worked outside around the homeless for years… I found stuff like this like every single week. What you’re seeing is severe schizophrenia. I would find completely nonsensical or sometimes coherent and disturbing journals and notes like this all the time. Creepy if you’ve never seen it before, less creepy when you’ve seen it many times.

One of the scariest experiences I’ve had in the mountains was being way out in the middle of nowhere after midnight on the Blue Ridge Parkway, sitting at an overlook in my car eating a burger. A car that was coming down the road pulled in directly towards me, drove slowly past my car and came to a stop right beside my car, not fully past my car but somewhat behind me so I couldn’t easily see them.

I was already finished with my meal and packed up to head back out on the road as they were pulling in. I waited a few seconds, but they just sat there. It would have only taken a moment for someone to step out and be at my door. That’s how close they stopped, despite having plenty of room to have pulled further through and given us both plenty of space. I had the car running with my headlights on the whole time I was stopped there so I just put it into drive and got the fuck out of there.

I do a lot of driving out on the Parkway late at night when I have the time to get out there. It’s beautiful and peaceful out there late at night. I pass people out there stopped at overlooks all the time, everyone gives each other space and nobody shows up and approaches you like that at that hour.

I definitely got a bad vibe from it and I’m glad I didn’t stick around to find out what they might have had in mind. That encounter put me off of going out there for a few months at least.

Scariest thing out in the middle of the wilderness many miles away from people is a random human who shows up and starts acting sketchy.
