Oh wow, now I realize why I didn't find those creepy Source 1 maps "creepy", but rather... chilling or somewhat relaxing. I've grown up in a post-soviet country, and they all have one thing in common - their streets are full of those creepy elements: dirty walls, repetitive architecture, oftenly cloudy black-and-white weather, ambience and emptiness especially on work days or at night. Those maps kinda make me feel at home. Valve really nailed that post-soviet style.

It doesn't really matter which game you're playing, as long as there's nothing but yourself in there, it can feel incredibly lonely and creepy

I like how everyone has forgotten that Gordon Freeman does has an official HL2 Model that was made by Valve themselves... exclusively for Japan... Wow Gabe...

I think first Portal nailed this "source creepiness" feeling

I guess what makes the Source 2 version creepier in your opinion is because the environments are much more grounded/realistic now in comparison to Source 1

There’s one thing I notice about Source in general: Sun.

In most games, the sun is the brightest part of the map (obviously), and they show that. In Source, the sun feels more like a bright LED light that _happened_ to be as big as the sun and is pointing towards earth. You can clearly see defined shadows casted by numerous objects but the sun itself seems like it’s covered by the clouds especially in certain skyboxes where you can clearly see the blue skies and the white clouds but the sun itself is just a white speck. That alone puts you in the uncanny valley because you _know_ the sun is supposedly *_blinding._*

Even with Source 2’s take on realistic lighting, there’s still instances where outdoors look flat when you *_KNOW_* it’s supposed to be very bright and very dark at the same time.

Half-Life 2 has the best ambient sounds I've ever heard in a game. That strange hum from the citidel is awesome. I can't even describe the feeling.

The source feeling is just... lifeless. Not because of the lack of people and animals, but the place itself looks somewhat dead. The whole place looks like one of those paranormal activity videos in abandoned ruined forgotten places, unexplained and uneasy, like a graveyard. And that's what I love about it

Whats strange is that I dont feel this in empty TF2 maps even tho its the same engine as HL2, the loneliness of TF2 feels more calming, still odd but not as creepy.

You're walking through oversized, blocky maps that are meant to be played in with other players. And most importantly they are made with assets designed for a post-apocalyptic Soviet-looking setting, so of course it's all creepy

I remember downloading cracked version of Half-Life 2 when I was the kid. Game came out with Half-Life 2 Deatmach. I never played it before, so i were going to give it a try. As a kid I didn't know when you download some cracked version of the games, there are no players online, cause its a fake game. I can remember just messin around, shooting at imaginary enemies, exploring maps, then suddenly i felt like someone or something is watching me, again this was cracked version so no players online. Map werent creepy at all, just ambiance was creepy itself. Anyone has a simliar memory of Half-Life 2 Deatmach?

4:41 i think the unnervingness from the graffitis come more from the fact theyre supposed to be in places nobody ever stays in long or really checks often, not just, out in the open

HL2/Source maps tend to make me feel at home and safe somehow, even if they can be a little eerie. Not sure why, but I can't really say the same for Source 2.

It's an almost uncanny valley-like effect. It looks just right enough to make you feel like you're there, but at the same time just wrong enough to make you feel out of place. Almost like a dream in a way.

No. No I don't.

What makes it eery for me is the lack of wind. It's like the air is static, dead, lifeless. The trees don't dangle in the wind, as don't the bushes. It feels heavy...

Source 1/2 always manages to nail that feeling of emptiness and desolateness.

I like how the source engines icon/logo didn't get slimpyfied, instead it just got more slightly details

This is what it feels like to live in Eastern Europe.

3:46 well, a mapper probably wouldn't want to spend the time and brush count to make a building interior that's inaccessible anyway
source: I am an amateur source mapper
