Source 2 is Schrodingers game engine, it’s somehow in a state between existing and not existing until we can finally see it

Honestly at this point I wouldn't be shocked if this "surprise" at e3 was Gabe running into the stage and farting into the mic

Valve has a strange stance on Source 2. They don't seem particularly eager to get their engine out there, into people's hands. Well, they do, but not to the same extent as Unity or Unreal. Sounds to me like they're doing it for internal development purposes, but I doubt it's for any big games in particular. Great recap. This is super useful for understanding the context of Source 2, and this is probably what I'll refer to first when people ask about it.

How long till Source 2 confirmed is a meme.

"Free to use, as long as it released on Steam"

That's a very smart move on Valve's part. Their are not asking for royalty, because they already have a royalty. Quite huge one. Every sold game makes 30% to the valve's pocket. So while Unreal takes 5%, valve takes 30%.

The reality of game development is that you most likely already planning to release your game on steam, 30% cut is still there. So it's the question - 30% or 35%?

As someone who works in the Source Engine I feel its time Valve gives us something new to play with. While Source is flexible and making things such as maps or Half-Life 2 mods are easy so much of what I have to work with is extremely tedious sometimes. The dated Hammer editor, buggy programs such as Faceposer (which tended to crash a lot especially when I did work for Hunt Down The Freeman) and the fact that newer engines are able to make basic things that Source takes forever to make i.e textures and other things.

VNN, I loved the chill ambient feel of this video, I think its a great tone for your History vids or catch up videos. Keep it up man :)

A huge part of my teenage years were searching for quirkey Source mods, joining weird communities around mods like Zombie Master, Dystopia etc. Every night there was a new map or version of map to play, somone would know of some secret invisible clip to get somewhere weird on the map or exploit some funny bug. Those days were great.

Those mods only existed because it was exciting still to play in those engines. Valve really did a disservice by letting that just die of old age and not continueing to breath new life into the community with a new engine. Every week dozens more 14-15 year olds were trying out the mods and keeping the fire lit as older people had to leave because of work etc.. Valve just let the chain break and the once super exciting Source mod scene all but dried up.

That final section sums up modern Valve in a nutshell. Nobody has any god damn idea what they're doing because there's absolutely no direction. I bet Source 2 is nowhere near finished because the four people sitting in a closet somewhere working on it in their spare time left and the others are too busy experimenting.

*clicks on video about Source 2*
"This video is sponsored by Alliance: Heroes of the Spire."

Did anyone else laugh at that? It's not the most inappropriate product placement, but I thought it was funny that he's sponsored by a game that's clearly ripping off DOTA 2's style. Like if a Nintendo News Network video on Mario Odyssey started with a sponsorship by A Hat In Time.

At least the video wasn't sponsored by Hunt Down The Freeman.
