I like the rules about boundaries, false attacks, bridging, being passive and not engaging. I don't like the rules about the different grips. Also, we need our leg throws back dangit.

I like it.  Shows the need for refined rules with the growth of the sport and it's returning things to a more dynamic game as it used to be.  Now if they would only include newaza in judo again that would be good!

I think that all the kumi kata immediate attack sequences  (1:39) are just ridiculous.
How on earth can they expect you to perform an attack in 1-2 seconds from when you got the grip. This is insane...

Some rules are developed in no-opposition situation, as "immediately attack", however Judo is a sport of opportunity, so to choose the good timing for attacking is the key, even more than the perfection on the technique. If you are penalized by shido when you grab and do some movements preparing the space for attack. The good judo is being penalized, and judokas are being obligated to attack without preparing the space (moving with the grip to avoid the adversary blocking and to unbalance). I can imagine judokas won't use these grips, so we will see a limited judo with employment of few grips. Furthermore, "immediate attack" is a subjective matter, it will bring a lot of problems for the referee calculate what was immediately and what not, besides the continuous pauses of the match.

I was thinking about coming back and competing in judo this year, not saying I'd be any good but just for the love of the art and competing. but the rules have changed so much since I last competed I don't think I'll even bother.

They keep saying they're taking stuff out of the sport for "safety", but you can avoid a yuko by posting on your elbow? That sounds like dislocated shoulders waiting to happen.

Great, useful breakdown BTW, it just sucks that there's just so many crap rules.

With the current ban on leg grabs, no grabs below the belt and now this?  Just take a moment and think what we have lost. Gone are Morote gari, Kata ashi dori, Kibisu gaeshi, Kuchiki taoshi, Kata guruma, Te guruma, and Sukui nage not to mention counters to counters to Hiza guruma and Sasae tsuri komi ashi, and hand-assisted O uchi gari, Ko uchi gari, Sode tsuri komi goshi and Ippon seoi nage.
With constant changes and limitations it's no wonder Judo is fighting for it's survival in the U.S, Judokas fustrated with this "Sport Judo" find it easier to compete in submission wrestling/BJJ tournaments where their not limited on techniques they can or can't use.

The rules are getting more and more ridiculous. This new judo is starting to become unrecognisable to the one Kano founded. Good thing judokas can fall back on bjj now to practice our art.

Question!!! On 1:14 in this video, with the "pushing down grip with ashiwaza" is the SHIDO on the TORI or the UKE??? They need to make that more clear!

it is refining sport judo to be more judo like ... but it undermines judo as a martial art as a whole. Judoka before the last rule change, were still able to pull off great judo with the leg grabs (morote gari-basically double legging) . Now it is like saying judoka can only pull off judo technique, when the opponent is fighting judo like (which i feel is a real shame)

Edge Situations (03:32 to 04:27). As I watch this, I find it confusing and ridiculous to call a Shido to Tori (attacker) when a foot or both his/her feet are out of the square area. Does it mean that for a split second, you have to react bringing your feet back inside the area so you don't get penalized? Honestly, I do not believe anyone will have that quick action/reaction decision to put back your feet in the right spot. At times, you have to think your move. To me, what they are showing is easy in demo but difficult to practice in actual Shiai (04:30 to 04:48). I bet you, these IJF officials will probably make mistakes regarding this Tori's foot or feet outside the mat rule.

This was great. We need more like this in every language. I would prefer to clearly state at the end of each example either "matte, " "shido" or "valid."Considering this preference, a concise video, like this, should be made after every update.
Furthermore there should be one, less concise and more organized, video defining all rules, and one major video defining all techniques.

Why won't they just let people fight a match? I can see this turning Judo into a pushing match to get the other player penalized.

Excellent video and instruction. Thanks for taking the time to produce such a well constructed lesson.

from my point of view, with all of this rule, the number of techniques that you can apply are very limited, that is one of the reason because a lot of judokas just use one or two techniques... for example kata guruma, sukui nage, including a little mistake doing a tomoe nage could be transformed in a shido and those techniques cannot be applied directly, in other hand the judokas will need be very accurate, faster to obtain an ippon, finally those rules add just entropy to judges and competitors... thank you very much to give us a very good explanation (very graphically) about the new rules... thank you again, regards from Chile.

I couldn't finish watching this...  This is how Taekwondo started until it became the standard!  Pathetic, watered down, daycare Martial Arts!  Let Judo be what it was and meant to be.  One of the most effective Martial Arts!

oh man I am disgusted, what was that? why they are destroying judo this way? why again shido for stepping out? I can't even prepare one sided throw, I just have to throw, those false attacks and real attacks were just parody, I'd like to see a ref judging it. they should focus on fluency of fight, punish really dangerous things, real passivity. Not taking away variety, possibilities, nice throws, creativity. What will be next year? only right hand grip allowed? and only variations of seoi-nage allowed? it is just getting so complicated, they keep changing it, year by year, these things should be getting simpler, why not allowing attack when you step out? shouldn't they rather increase rule about safety zones then stress fighters to focus on their position? why do I have to throw immediately from one side grip? who said it is absolute dominant position? Every position has it's specific defense, if opponent can't defend one side grip, why should I be punished(if it is obvious I want to attack)? and I am not going to comment leg grabs, kata guruma, te guruma, although it seems I never going to justify in my head why they did it. this just left me with bitter taste ... judo quo vadis?

Shouldn't 12:33 be hansoku-make for grapping below the belt?

I used to play Judo when I was a child 50 years ago, but haven't kept up with it.  Watching the Judo videos lately, I've been struck with the innovations--good and bad.  There are exciting new and innovative throws and combinations.  I have mixed feelings about the mid-air gymnastics used to avoid getting scored on (either ippon, wazari, or yuko) which seem good for the upper levels but dangerous for most Judo players. (Don't do this at home, kids.)   What has bothered me is all the fighting over hand grips which has been a distraction from what I think of as interesting Judo.  The top players all seem to have injured fingers that require taping.  It seems a shame that finger injuries should play such an important role in Judo when it was unheard of 50 years ago.  So as a Judo watcher rather than player, I welcome the rule changes.

Was taking a break from judo for my injury but now... Everything I used to do will make me throw the match...
Time for some BJJ
