There is a growing feeling in Europe that something is broken in the transatlantic relations. After the latest events, there is a strong perception that trust between the EU and United States has been eroded. So is it time to pause and reset the EU-US relationship?

The EU needs to get its act together and get its own Defense Army.

Time for Europe to be selfish and take some distance with Usa on every decision.

This guy offers nothing in terms of perspective/analysis. An interview about nothing.

That wasn't France's understanding of "build back better"....

Even if Australia didn't want the subs any more, the way that they stabbed France in the back together with the USA and UK was very crude.
This is not how you treat your allies, especially the oldest ally of the USA.
This is about more than just the 50 Billion. This shows no concern in Washington, London or Canberra about what such moves mean for others, including the domestic politics of France or anyone else.

03:40 "---I can't understand why France, or Europe, is so upset---" Yeah we've noticed, and we've started to move on. Started with Bush, trump just solidified it and Biden put a rose on the casket.

What does pause even mean in this context? Is he saying put the relationship on hold for months and years or is it just a good long moment to reflect and think about which direction things are going and then reevaluate? Nothing is forever and a reevaluations are often necessary.

I don't understand the concept of some unified transatlantic "West". As an American who has a great deal of respect for the EU, I just don't think the US and a lot of the EU member states share much in common at all.

Since the 80s at the latest, the US has very much been a corporate run government with an extremely individualistic and commercial culture. At this point, our "culture" is pop culture and social media. I don't particularly see why the EU tries so hard to bend to the whims of the US, which does whatever is in our lobbying companies' best interests, regardless of whether it's a Republican or Democrat in the Oval Office... I just don't see much in terms of shared values or interests at this point. While Europeans study philosophers, we study Tweets and pop morality. You can't really use logic with us...

"being tough on china while continuing the trade relationship"
is basically funding the military of the potential adversary we might have to fight one day and vice versa.

After reading Jane Mayer's "Dark Money", I take interviews like this with a grain of salt. Who is Tyson Barker? What a CV and career he's had. But, the real bio is scrubbed.

I have lived in Europe and the US. Europe no longer seems to understand geopolitics. It is obsessed with trade. It seems to believe the dispute between China and the US is about trade. The US is worried about China's military threat and the Eurasian bloc it is creating with Russia. Free trade is not the issue. Both the Anglosphere countries and the EU are talking past each other.

America has been pulling away from Europe for decades now, ever since the fall of the USSR. Only the Europeans didn’t want to see it. America doesn’t need Europe, they are the last advanced consumption lead country left in the world. Their economy is also the lest dependent on trade as a percentage of GDP in the world. Even then half of that is in the Americas. The EU on the other hand is a rapidly aging heavily export driven zone. They are in fact a competitor of the US, not an economic partner. To then add in the fact an EU army is a direct competitor to NATO for funding. You cant have both and if NATO goes so does any last direct links with the US. The simple fact is the US has little need to be Europe centered, but they do need to be Asia centered.
