Ashridge Nurseries shows you how to 'heel in' bareroot trees in order to keep them safe during freezing weather. Done properly, heeling in can keep trees dormant from November right through to March. You should try to heel plants into soft, unfrozen ground that will not waterlog - but if this is not possible, you can heel plants into containers with soil, compost, or even sawdust.
