Let's dig into the specs of this new sensor that surely will find it's way in future professional E-mount cameras too!

it promises twice the light gathering capability of current sensors!

NOTE: As I was just reading a physics text I made a Lapsus and in the video I kept saying electrons instead of photons :)

Thanks for explaining why dual layer is a big deal.

Yes make another video on the Xperia 1 5 and how the new sensor is utilized and everything this video was informative but cant wait to see your next video that goes more in depth about it.

Don't have too expectation on application of this new tech on sony alpha camers soon. First camera equiped with small size BSI sensor was released in 2009 (DSC-TX1), and the first camera equiped with large size BSI sensor was released in 2015 (alpha 7R II). It took 6 years for Sony to overcome the tech barrier for manufacturing of image sensor in large size. Hopefully, Sony could utilize this new tech on E-Mount camera soon.

Sony Xperia phones are now essentially Sony's point and shoot cameras. They dont make point and shoot cameras anymore, and the Xperia camera system is designed from the ground up by their Alpha camera division. So i think its very valid to cover a new Xperia phone. Especially as Sony is the only camera brand that makes smartphones.

If they FINALLY get the pricing right this phone might turn out to be a hidden gem.

I'm hoping that they bump the pixel count up on the A9iii to 32mp (where the A7iv is) and then by virtue of the increased size of the light gathering part of the pixel they are able to (even just slightly) increase the DR of the sensor. This would would be incredible on a BSI sensor as it would keep file sizes more manageable than the A1, Z9, (rumored) Z8, as well as having a fast readout. This could really be game changing! Could you imagine a fast readout A9, with the detail of an A7iv, and (almost) the light gathering capability of the A7Siii !?!?!?!?!? My simple mind just wants to AWESOME

I don't carry my RX100 VII so I am hoping this is a worthy replacement for my Xperia Pro-i. Wait till the reveal next week.

When will we start to see all the 'camera phone tricks' in our proper cameras? ie instant multi photo combining for noise free dark shots and well exposed backlit photos etc?

I’d be more excited about the sensor on apsc tbh. Full frame is already great. Having a full frame quality on an apsc body would be amazing for portability.

This tech might be really beneficial to their RX100 series, not only their phones. I think it's not as beneficial for APC and above, but those smaller sensors make better use of it

How is the sony dual layer pixel sensor diferent from Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) from isocell HP2 from Samsung? I read both papers they look to have the same innovation.

This could be a huge thing for the A7s IV

No mater what i will upgrade to this one!
Why ? Well i'm on xperia xz premium so it will be an improvment for sure 😅

That is false.
This only applies to very small sensors with high pixel density so phones for example.
Sonys example is based on a 1 µm² pixel, an A7 IV for example has 26 µm² pixels so WAY more area. The fill factor is much larger here so the advantages is significantly smaller.
This will not come to sensors with APSC sizes or larger.

Andrea, you should talk to sony and ask them to send the phone after the event so you can test it ..

I doibt it is 2 times, as BSI already is not that bad at light gathering. Still, great to see progress.

So it's just a stacked sensor? The actual sensor size matters more I think.

I thought it was the principle of BSI sensors !

Wow, can see what A7S IV can do with such thing.
