Qualcomm compares H.265 and H.264 video at MWC demo

The H.265 video compression technology won't be done until next year, but Qualcomm showed an Android tablet decoding video with the next-gen codec at Mobile World Congress. In a comparison with today's mainstream H.264 codec, H.265 needed almost half the the storage space and network bandwidth for streaming. On average, Qualcomm thinks H.265 will require about 40 percent less capacity.

Wow, a video showing a video of a video...

I did watch this few times just to be sure, but what I'm seeing it looks like the image quality on H.265 looks better (as in clearer image). When you combine that with almost half the file size.. Just amazing. Can't wait.

What benefits in hardware terms? Youtube video will be less heavy to play by CPU?

720p will still mostly be around 4.37 Gb because of the DVD-capacity. But the quality will be even better though ;)

What do you guys predict once h265 is out > Better quality videos for the same size as h264 videos right now or lighter videos with the same old boring quality ? Personaly I really hope it will evolve into situation 1...

Are you sure that CPu will be overload!? and if it is so, why?

@thetommantom

It's showing that even at low bit-rates, the quality is better, as well as the compression.

I wonder how long it would take to transcode a h264 Video to a h265

Yes you can. You can see the relative difference. H.265 have a lot less bandwidth. So if you CAN'T spot the difference, then it has a better compression ratio.

is there an app that enables me to watch h.264 or h.265 files

Yes, it will require more from the CPU, because it will need to decode more data than on the previous H.264

thanks for your answer... I hope they will integrate some SSE script to allow parallel compute for decoding.

Cameras will require Core i7 CPU to encode this ;)

"no video difference" .... lol .. perhaps it's true, but this video shows nothing at all... all details of the video shown on this screen are lost by many elements, like the poor quality of the camera, its own compression, then youtube's transcoding when the video was uploaded. last thing, luminosity of the camera (or gamma or the vid) is way too high, artifically reducing every single difference we could perhaps reveal.

Interesting. Doesn't help that its being recorded but still....

I've noticed at smaller sizes 265 is much better looking

@justanotheraccount yea, but still, the only difference is file size which is incredible.

@nousername21 good, no video 3mb vs 6mb files size is great!!!

This is test from developer of x264 for encoding:
_h
It took a WEEK to encode 10 sec video. I understand that it was non-optimized version of codec, but h265 still requires alot of computing power.
