History of iCloud

iCloud was introduced in 2011, but its cloud-computing technology stretches back to the early 2000’s. But before we get into that, let me clarify what iCloud is for those for those of you who may not know. Basically, iCloud is a service for Apple devices that lets you store files on remote servers rather than on your own device. This frees up storage space on your Apple device and allows your files to be accessible from any device connected to your iCloud account. So if you take a photo on your iPhone, it’ll automatically be available on your Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. It’s a pretty cool concept that may sound simple, but implementation was extremely challenging and took several iterations to work correctly. To fully understand the role of iCloud and all its preceding services, we’ll have to zoom out and take a look at the development of the entire cloud computing industry.

iCloud is great on Apple devices. However, the iCloud Windows client leaves much to be desired, and file sync just doesn't work for heavy users. A shame really!

People should understand the sheer importance of Messages on iCloud. Aside from your iMessages and voice messages being sent to all your other iDevices, automatically adding SMS to the other devices is great.

I'd say mid-90's was the beginning of the modern internet. I distinctly remember running Netscape for the first time in late '94 thinking that this is going to be HUGE. I had dialup access from home through the University. Almost nobody (public) could access the internet easily until this time. I'm glad I lived this transition... at time when you had to know *how* it all worked, not just how to apply a filter to a snapchat image. :-P

500GB Limit? iCloud goes up to 2TB
Unless you mean free storage. I doubt they’ll do that much for free

0:40 Relatable, the picture is relatable because I can never free up space and it constantly reminds me to.

Most mac users I know, use OneDrive since it offers 1TB free if you get office 365 most users see that as a better deal then what Apple offers
also it is much easier to share documents with PC users and work together on a Word of PowerPoint project remotely

iCloud is great but they really should give more than 5GB of free storage. Even my mom is now paying the $1 monthly fee for the 50GB option because she needs to back up her iPhone and iPad.

Apple really needs to let us upload photos free like google does. that'd really help a lot

Already has a 2tb limit and can be shared across family sharing

I use Google cloud as my Android purchases got me over 250gb free. My iPhone is my mobile computer so having a cloud client is important to stay organized.

IIRC, an iCloud account only gets 5GB of storage if the account is created from an iOS/macOS device. Accounts created on the web only get 1GB.

Excellent video. Do you have any idea about what the future of iCloud is? Many of the tools on iCloud are changing with ios13 so I’m wondering when iCloud will go along for the ride. Apple hasn’t talked about iCloud in a keynote for a long time. It needs some love. Thanks!!
